{"id":162429,"date":"2025-08-21T00:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T00:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/162429\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T00:26:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T00:26:11","slug":"catholic-charities-fort-worth-parts-ways-with-ceo-names-interim-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/162429\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic Charities Fort Worth parts ways with CEO, names interim leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Catholic Charities Fort Worth President and CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michael.iglio.9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Iglio<\/a> is no longer with the nonprofit, officials said Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beth Kwasny was named interim CEO and started in the role on Monday, according to the nonprofit\u2019s Aug. 20 statement to the Fort Worth Report. She previously chaired the Catholic Charities Fort Worth board of directors.<\/p>\n<p>Officials from the nonprofit did not immediately respond to the Report\u2019s questions as to why Iglio is no longer with the charity, whether he resigned or was let go, and other queries related to the leadership change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kwasny, a retired Air Force officer, has worked in the defense sector for more than 30 years in both military and contractor roles, according to the nonprofit\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/catholiccharitiesfortworth.org\/senior-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. She has volunteered with Catholic Charities Fort Worth for two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Iglio had overseen Catholic Charities Fort Worth since June 2023. Before that, he was the organization\u2019s chief operating officer beginning in April 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The leadership announcement comes a month after the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/07\/18\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-reverses-course-will-lead-texas-refugee-services-through-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reversed<\/a> a decision to end their federally funded role in leading Texas\u2019 refugee resettlement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fort Worth nonprofit has operated the Texas Office for Refugees since 2021, the agency designated by the federal government to lead refugee resettlement in the state. Texas withdrew from the nation\u2019s resettlement program in 2016, effectively leaving nonprofits to administer the federal refugee funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organization initially planned to end its role in statewide resettlement in October. <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/07\/18\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-reverses-course-will-lead-texas-refugee-services-through-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iglio announced in July<\/a> that the nonprofit would continue the work through the end of its federal contract \u2014 Sept. 30, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic Charities Fort Worth has 24 charity partners, a spokesperson for the nonprofit told the Fort Worth Report. More than 5,000 refugees made Texas their home in 2023, leading the nation in refugee resettlement, according to a November 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/ohss.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-11\/2024_1108_ohss_refugee_annual_flow_report_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic Charities Fort Worth was one of several aid groups that sued the federal government at the beginning of the year after President Donald Trump\u2019s administration announced and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/realigning-the-united-states-refugee-admissions-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reversed a federal funding pause<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>The organization filed a March 3 suit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/03\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-sues-federal-government-to-unlock-36m-in-paused-refugee-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accusing the government of unlawfully freezing grants<\/a> allocated to the refugee resettlement program. Catholic Charities Fort Worth officials said other organizations received their allocated funds when the freeze order was reversed, while its payment requests went unanswered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a court filing, federal officials said they flagged Catholic Charities for a \u201cprogram integrity review.\u201d Its funds were paused to explore whether the organization \u201cbilled for activities that were outside the scope\u201d of its grants and if the grants paid for activities that exceeded the requirements of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/96th-congress\/senate-bill\/643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Refugee Act of 1980<\/a>, according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>After two weeks of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/03\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-sues-federal-government-to-unlock-36m-in-paused-refugee-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal back and forth<\/a>, Catholic Charities Fort Worth received <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/17\/fort-worth-based-texas-refugee-office-receives-47m-in-paused-funds-after-legal-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$47 million<\/a> on March 17, according to court documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deposited funds came days after the charity warned <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/13\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-could-lay-off-169-employees-amid-federal-funding-pause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">169 employees may be laid off<\/a>, according to a notification the charity submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission. Other affiliates of Catholic Charities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/news\/2025-02-13\/dallas-catholic-charities-refugee-resettlement-laid-off-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dallas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/immigration\/2025\/02\/11\/513534\/galveston-houston-catholic-charities-lays-off-120-employees-amidst-refugee-resettlement-program-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston and Galveston<\/a> also announced a series of layoffs following the January <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/28\/nx-s1-5277029\/trump-memo-halt-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pause<\/a> on refugee resettlement funding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iglio said in a July 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/07\/18\/catholic-charities-fort-worth-reverses-course-will-lead-texas-refugee-services-through-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> that Catholic Charities Fort Worth will use the remaining time in its contract \u201cfor a more stable and responsible transition that ensures the well-being of clients across Texas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marissa Greene is a Report for America corps member, covering faith for the Fort Worth Report.
