{"id":16243,"date":"2025-06-26T12:14:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16243\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:14:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:14:08","slug":"bbc-to-charge-u-s-audiences-for-news-via-subscription","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16243\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC To Charge U.S. Audiences For News Via Subscription"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/bbc\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc\" data-tag=\"bbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> in the States are set to pay for news for the first time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a move that has been trailed for several years, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/bbc-studios\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc-studios\" data-tag=\"bbc-studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC Studios<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/bbc-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc-news\" data-tag=\"bbc-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC News<\/a> are introducing a pay model starting at $49.99 per year or $8.99 per month to give users access to the BBC\u2019s news articles, features and the 24\/7 livestream of the BBC News channel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe BBC said this could be extended to ad-free doc series and films, early release podcasts and newsletters over the coming months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe BBC said its news website reaches nearly 60 million visitors in the U.S. alone. Notably, the move comes as CNN, which is run by former BBC Director General Mark Thompson, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/05\/cnn-streaming-service-upfronts-1236397195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gets set to unveil<\/a> its \u201cfirst true news streaming service,\u201d three years after the failed CNN+.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRebecca Glashow, CEO of BBC Studios Global Media &amp; Streaming, said the move represents the next phase of the BBC\u2019s \u201cbold mission\u201d unveiled more than three years ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cW\u2019e\u2019re bringing more of the BBC\u2019s trusted, high-quality content together in one powerful, easy-to-access destination,\u201d she added. \u201cOver the next few months, as we test and learn more about audience needs and habits, additional long-form factual content will be added to the offer for paying users. This is a major milestone and just the beginning of an exciting new chapter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWith a declining license fee and rising costs, the BBC has been under more and more pressure to generate commercial income via BBC Studios. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt already makes money outside the UK via subscription services like BritBox, BBC Select and BBC Player.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fans of the BBC in the States are set to pay for news for the first time.
