{"id":162592,"date":"2025-08-21T01:50:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T01:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/162592\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T01:50:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T01:50:09","slug":"san-antonio-man-sentenced-50-years-for-shooting-sapd-officer-with-shotgun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/162592\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio man sentenced 50 years for shooting SAPD officer with shotgun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Bexar County jury sentenced a man to 50 years for shooting an SAPD officer with a shotgun during a 2023 police chase.<\/p>\n<p>SAN ANTONIO \u2014 A San Antonio man will spend the next 50 years in prison after a Bexar County<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/article\/news\/local\/trial-shooting-sapd-officer-san-antonio-rubio-bernal-rodrigues-police-crime\/273-27d62d46-aeff-4e92-b98d-047026a837bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u00a0jury found him guilty of shooting an SAPD officer with a shotgun back in 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 20, 2025, Dominick Rubio was sentenced to 50 years after being found guilty of aggravated assault on a public servant.<\/p>\n<p>In September of 2023, SAPD Officer Bernal-Rodriguez was chasing down Rubio after attempting to serve an arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. At some point during the pursuit, records show Rubio shot Bernal-Rodriguez with a shotgun, striking him in the stomach and arm.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just the crime that got attention, it\u2019s what happened before the shooting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/article\/news\/local\/law-enforcement\/ticking-time-bomb-debate-over-keeping-violent-offenders-in-jail-continues-sapd-da\/273-b312bee4-0dac-46b7-982b-74164d8467a1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">sparked a big back and forth between SAPD and the District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The debate in Rubio&#8217;s case was over what can be done to prevent repeat violent offenders getting back into the streets.<\/p>\n<p>After this shooting,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kens5.com\/article\/news\/local\/law-enforcement\/former-bexar-county-da-weighs-in-back-and-forth-between-sapd-chief-and-district-attorney\/273-db137376-f093-4e9e-8805-f3f74e87eea1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales told KENS 5<\/a> that Chief McManus disbanded a repeat offender program unit in the department that was dedicated to tracking down repeat offenders.<\/p>\n<p>This disbanding happened in 2022, and Gonzales added, &#8220;rubio should have been in jail long before [the] shooting \u2013 and it was the SAPD\u2019s job to search for him, serve the warrant, and get him there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since the disbanding, SAPD moved the repeat offender program responsibilities to their covert response unit, who Gonzales said at the time was overturned with other cases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s sentence emphasizes our commitment to the safety of our community, as well as those who are sworn to protect it,&#8221; Gonzales said. &#8220;We are thankful for the partnerships that we have with our local law enforcement agencies and are grateful to have removed yet another habitual offender from our streets.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Bexar County jury sentenced a man to 50 years for shooting an SAPD officer with a shotgun&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":162593,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5133],"tags":[5229,7202,7203,358,3187,67,586,132,5230,68,2969],"class_list":{"0":"post-162592","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-antonio","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-san-antonio","10":"tag-sanantonio","11":"tag-texas","12":"tag-tx","13":"tag-united-states","14":"tag-united-states-of-america","15":"tag-unitedstates","16":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","17":"tag-us","18":"tag-usa"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115064250236686391","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/162592","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=162592"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/162592\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/162593"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=162592"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=162592"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=162592"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
