We want to come back to our country, and we want to be free. And we need the United States leadership for the world to support us,\u201d Jimenez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She added that the community has been waiting decades for an end to the system that has dominated their country\u2019s politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cVenezuela has been waiting for the end of the chavismo, madurismo, socialism \u2014 the way you want to call it. This horrible regime has been going on for 27 years now,\u201d Jimenez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Families still tied to home<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For many in Houston, the connection to Venezuela remains strong. Henry Pacheco, who left amid the country\u2019s crisis, said the hope of returning never goes away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think many of us would come back, knowing that we have a country in peace, a country that will prosper, that will continue to progress, a good government,\u201d Pacheco said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He believes that if change comes, Venezuelans abroad will return to help rebuild schools, businesses, and neighborhoods left behind. \u201cIt\u2019s about going home, not staying away forever,\u201d Pacheco added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>White House frames it as a fight against cartels<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Trump administration has emphasized that the deployment is part of a broader anti-drug operation aimed at disrupting criminal networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe Maduro regime is not the legitimate government of Venezuela. It is a narco-terror cartel. Maduro is a fugitive head of this cartel who has been indicted in the United States for trafficking drugs into the country,\u201d the White House press secretary said during a briefing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jimenez said that message resonates with many Venezuelans watching from Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI think he\u2019s going to be done with the cartels. That\u2019s what he promised. President Trump, we can see that he aligns what he says he does,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Experts caution against high expectations<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Still, political experts warn that the deployment is more symbolic than decisive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cPresident Trump can achieve two goals by sending U.S. assets towards the Venezuelan coast. First, the interdiction of drugs and sending a message to the Venezuelan government, which is very supportive of drug trafficking in cartels. The other is to send a message related to Chevron and Exxon assets in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Guyana,\u201d said Mark Jones, political science professor at Rice University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jones warned that Venezuelans looking for swift democratic change should remain cautious. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI hate to dump a bucket of cold water on Venezuelan hopes for democracy, but I don\u2019t see anything that President Trump is doing right now as really helping in terms of moving the needle towards the democratic system of Venezuela,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>Watching from Houston, waiting for change<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Houston\u2019s Venezuelan community has spent years organizing, protesting, and lobbying for international support.
