Sentinel)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Councilwoman Heather Hutt, Getty Conservation, and city officials unveiled plaques and visited three locations.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Councilwoman Heather Hutt and the Getty held a series of plaque unveiling ceremonies celebrating three newly designated historic-cultural monuments that honor Black history and heritage in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The sites were the late Tom and Ethel Bradley\u2019s residence, home of L.A.\u2019s first Black mayor and his wife; St. Elmo Village, a long-standing Black arts collective and residential space; and Jewel\u2019s Catch One, a historic safe haven for Black LGBTQ+ nightlife and activism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s some history and there\u2019s some contributions of people who made a real effort to make our city great,\u201d said Hutt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, you\u2019ll be able to see them, look them up, kids will be able to look up more about the history, more about the contributions and more about why those contributions are making changes.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-288881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/LA_Landmarks-2-300x139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"225\"   data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3662776839\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/>Councilwoman Heather Hutt gives remarks in front of Bradley residence. (Brian W. Carter\/L.A. Sentinel)<\/p>\n<p>These designations are part of the ongoing initiative by the African American Historic Places Los Angeles (AAHPLA). The L.A. Sentinel was on-site at the designation of the Bradley home where Hutt, Vince Bertoni, City of Los Angeles Planning Department; Rita Cofield, Getty Conservation; along with Lorraine and Toney Bradley and family members, spoke about the importance of this designation as a historical monument.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a mayor for 20 years in Los Angeles and he was the council member right here in the 10th district first,\u201d said Hutt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-288882\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/LA_Landmarks-3-e1755746982176-300x139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"225\"   data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3297415692\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/>Bradley family members pose for a picture. Sentinel)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in Leimert Park and what we\u2019ve done is designated this home as a historical monument\u2014it\u2019s an amazing day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hutt continued, \u201cHis children are here, they\u2019ve been able to talk about their experience growing up in the community, it wasn\u2019t really as multicultural as it is today.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, it\u2019s so very exciting because our parents were just the bravest people I could tell you\u2014to move here, under such hostility and to make a life for all of us here was the best thing that could happen,\u201d said Lorraine Bradley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetty has been really intentional about how they\u2019re memorializing spaces all over Los Angeles,\u201d said Hutt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-288883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/LA_Landmarks-4-300x139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"217\"   data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"1536853481\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"\/>From left, Toney and Lorraine Bradley give remarks about growing up in a very different community. Sentinel)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels amazing because everyone knew it\u2019s importance, but to get this plaque was solidifying,\u201d said Cofield. \u201cIt\u2019s putting a stamp on what everybody already knew.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The AAHPLA initiative is very important stated Hutt, who says in today\u2019s day and age, Black history is in danger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very exciting day especially for folks that worked hard to commemorate this place at a time, where so much of our history is trying to be erased,\u201d said Hutt. She shared that designating sites takes time, but she is happy to see it happening now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThey went through the whole process and I\u2019m happy that it\u2019s happening under my watch,\u201d said Hutt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saw opportunities that were better here and that\u2019s one of the reasons we moved and the community finally came around, took a while, but look at this neighborhood now, fully integrated, everybody from every ethnicity here because they know they have the opportunity to make a life and that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about,\u201d said Bradley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank them so much for their courage and my sister and I made it because of them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f \u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Toney and Lorraine Bradley with Councilwoman Heather Hutt unveil the Bradley home as a historic landmark.
