But Dunn cautions against taking on student debt late in life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cI don\u2019t think a parent in the middle class should martyr the rest of their financial life to improve someone\u2019s financial life who\u2019s just starting their career,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Trade schools or more affordable college options may make more sense depending on the student\u2019s trajectory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">For those with high-deductible health plans, an health savings account (HSA) can act like a \u201chealthcare 401(k) [plan],\u201d said Dunn. Contributions are tax-free, the money grows tax-free and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cIf you\u2019re eligible, it\u2019s an amazing strategy,\u201d Dunn said. Still, he advises prioritizing retirement accounts first: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/retirement\/401k\/what-is-401k\/?hyperlink_type=manual&amp;utm_term=incontent_link_5&amp;utm_campaign=1313151&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com&amp;utm_content=8&amp;utm_medium=rss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Invest in your 401(k);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Invest in your 401(k)<\/a> before your HSA. Most Americans won\u2019t retire because they\u2019ve saved a fortune, but because they\u2019ve managed to lower their expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe middle class can\u2019t always save more money,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cThey have to reduce their cost of living.
