{"id":16314,"date":"2025-06-26T12:56:15","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16314\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:56:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T12:56:15","slug":"san-antonio-expects-to-switch-gears-on-how-it-handles-floodplain-in-southwest-side-neighborhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16314\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio expects to switch gears on how it handles floodplain in Southwest Side neighborhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 The City of San Antonio Public Works Department said its plan to relocate more than 100 people in the Thompson Community is no longer under consideration. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/03\/26\/residents-fear-displacement-as-city-considers-flood-prevention-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/03\/26\/residents-fear-displacement-as-city-considers-flood-prevention-measures\/\">KSAT first spoke to residents<\/a> who live within the Concepci\u00f3n Creek Drainage Flood Plan in March 2024 and again in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/10\/24\/san-antonios-proposed-drainage-project-threatens-generations-of-homes-in-thompson-neighborhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2024\/10\/24\/san-antonios-proposed-drainage-project-threatens-generations-of-homes-in-thompson-neighborhood\/\">follow-up report last October<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The creek runs along U.S. Highway 90 to the south. Updates from the Federal Emergency Management Agency show the area between General Hudnell Drive to Interstate 35 has a wider flood area than previously believed. The area, <a href=\"https:\/\/saspeakup.com\/LX6003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/saspeakup.com\/LX6003\">which has 2,200 structures in the floodplain<\/a>, has a 1% or higher risk of flooding each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Eddine Medina and Sara Mauricio both live in the area and face the probability that their home would be demolished to build a drainage pond. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Those plans, they were told, are no longer considered as the city switches gears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWell, a lot of the neighbors are kind of leery about that,\u201d Mauricio said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be skeptical.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">District 5 has set up a stakeholders group of residents and businesses that can look at any possible plans engineers may come up with. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Some residents said it\u2019s difficult to hear because they claimed no one who lives in the impacted area was chosen to be a part of the stakeholders group. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s disturbing that, you know, they won\u2019t include us with those stakeholders,\u201d Medina said. \u201cSo, how are we to know what\u2019s going on with that behind-the-doors meeting when we\u2019re not involved? We\u2019re directly impacted, and so we should be involved.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A Public Works Department spokesperson said the city council is expected to approve a federal FEMA grant for $1.38 million in August.
