World No. 1 Jannik Sinner<\/a> suffered his \u201cworst nightmare\u201d when he got sick last weekend during the Cincinnati Open and had to retire in Monday\u2019s final<\/a> against Carlos Alcaraz.<\/p>\n

Speaking Wednesday on ESPN, Sinner\u2019s coach, ESPN broadcaster Darren Cahill, added that Sinner suffered from a \u201cvirus\u201d that caused him to pull out down 5-0 to Alcaraz on Monday.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old Italian is the defending U.S. Open singles champion and has won three of the last four major titles, including Wimbledon earlier this summer.<\/p>\n

He pulled out of the Mixed Doubles event<\/a> at the U.S. Open but is expected to be fine by the time the singles tournament starts on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to him briefly last night. He was feeling a bit better last night,\u201d Cahill said on air. \u201cHe will take today off as well, that\u2019s the plan, and hopefully get on the court [Thursday] and start hitting a few balls….We are confident he\u2019s going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The draw is Thursday and the singles tournament starts Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news for Sinner is that it\u2019s not an injury, so the illness, they\u2019ll get over that in a couple of days,\u201d ESPN\u2019s Patrick McEnroe said on a conference call.<\/p>\n
