{"id":16393,"date":"2025-06-26T13:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T13:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16393\/"},"modified":"2025-06-26T13:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T13:35:09","slug":"bbc-website-adds-paywall-for-us-users-details-subscription-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/16393\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC Website Adds Paywall for US Users, Details Subscription Prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOnline news and programming from the U.K.\u2019s biggest broadcaster will carry a price for some American fans. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/bbc\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc\" data-tag=\"bbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> Studios and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/bbc-news\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc-news\" data-tag=\"bbc-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC News<\/a> have launched the \u201cfirst phase\u201d of a pay model for BBC.com in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tU.S users of BBC.com who choose not to pay will still have access to \u201cselect global breaking news stories,\u201d as well as BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service radio livestreams, BBC World Service Languages sites, and a variety of free newsletters and podcasts, the BBC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the initial phase of the BBC\u2019s paywall launch, the subscription will cost $8.99 per month or $49.99 per year. U.S. users who sign for a subscription will get unlimited access to the BBC\u2019s news articles, feature stories and the 24-7 livestream of the BBC News channel. In the coming months \u201cas we test and learn from audience consumption,\u201d the BBC said, ad-free documentary series and films (including the full BBC Select documentary catalogue), ad-free and early release podcasts, and exclusive newsletters and content will be included in the offer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor those in the U.K., there will be no change to the services. All the content available on BBC.com is also available to U.K. audiences through the BBC\u2019s various channels and services. The BBC also has no current plans to introduce a pay model for the website outside of North America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSeveral major U.S.-based news outlets also have paywalls, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/cnn-com-subscriptions-3-99-month-29-99-year-1236160518\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN installed a paywall last fall for its website<\/a>, with heavier users prompted to pay $3.99 per month for access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the U.S., the BBC is employing a \u201cdynamic\u201d pay model to determine access to BBC.com. Using this method, all users visiting the site from within the U.S. \u201cwill be assessed based on how they interact with our content, including how much they read and how long they stay.\u201d According to the BBC, this approach \u201callows casual readers to explore freely, while offering our most engaged users the opportunity to unlock even more\u201d by option to pay a subscription fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe site identifies users based on their device\u2019s geolocation. U.K. Licence Fee payers traveling to the U.S. for holiday or work can access their usual content via the BBC News app, if they have installed the latest versions from the U.K. app stores before traveling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBBC.com is commercially funded and operates separately from other BBC platforms in the U.K. According to the company, the U.S. pay-model launch supports <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/bbc-studios\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bbc-studios\" data-tag=\"bbc-studios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC Studios<\/a>\u2019 \u201congoing effort to grow international commercial revenue that helps fund BBC\u2019s journalism and storytelling and delivers greater value for the license fee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re bringing more of the BBC\u2019s trusted, high-quality content together in one powerful, easy-to-access destination,\u201d Rebecca Glashow, CEO of BBC Studios Global Media and Streaming, said in a statement. \u201cOver the next few months, as we test and learn more about audience needs and habits, additional long-form factual content will be added to the offer for paying users.
