Immigration\u2019s a big topic today, again. An arrest at an elementary school, arbitrary detentions, demands to show papers, a stated goal of mass deportations \u2013 it kind of sounds bad when I write it all out like that, huh?\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s more immigration news in the rest of our newsletter today. Now people from Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua have also lost their protection from deportation after a court ruling this week. Not a great look for a democracy that once prided itself on being a \u201cmelting pot\u201d and \u201ca nation of immigrants.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some \u2013 not all, but some \u2013 local politicians are stepping up to protect people whose lives have been upended by these decisions. You can read more about that in our top story, too.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also got stories about a big shake-up in local broadcast media ownership, where you can find \u201cCool Zones\u201d in the oppressive heat (which is a summer heat wave, not an autumn one, I\u2019m sorry I said that, can you please stop emailing me now?) and a sad story about the passing of Maka, the beloved Western lowland gorilla who lived out his life at the San Diego Zoo. <\/p>\n

His death came during a difficult period for the zoo, which has lost a few animals in recent weeks to age and illness. Maka was 30. <\/p>\n
