(video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"2e4e0ec8-8819-4665-b01a-4a1ae1dfb108\">The sun unleashed two spectacular prominence eruptions on Aug. 20 \u2014 and they may be among the most jaw-dropping events of the entire solar cycle.<\/p>\n<p>First came a colossal eruption off <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>&#8216;s southeastern limb, caught in stunning detail by NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22081-solar-dynamics-observatory.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22081-solar-dynamics-observatory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solar Dynamics Observatory<\/a> (SDO) and NOAA&#8217;s GOES-SUVI instrument. Aurora chaser <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958280472880103598\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958280472880103598\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jure Atanackov <\/a>called it &#8220;one of the top events of Solar Cycle 25,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958321361387979082\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958321361387979082\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow\">praising<\/a> its &#8220;spectacular structure and plasma knots&#8221; as a massive cloud of solar material tore away from the surface. (Image credit: NASA\/ESA SOHO via Helioviewer.org)<\/p>\n<p id=\"605765b9-a785-490f-8143-2a08f76fb576\">The immense blast hurled a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejection<\/a> (CME) into space, confirmed by imagery from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18501-soho-solar-heliospheric-observatory.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18501-soho-solar-heliospheric-observatory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SOHO<\/a> spacecraft&#8217;s LASCO coronagraph. Fortunately for Earth, the CME is moving well away from our planet.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"605765b9-a785-490f-8143-2a08f76fb576-1\">Space weather forecaster Sara Housseal <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SNHWx\/status\/1958186704998736066\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SNHWx\/status\/1958186704998736066\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow\">shared this view <\/a>showing the CME firing out to the southeast east &#8220;the Sun said none for you,&#8221; Housseal wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f4e543d1-6837-45c8-96ba-3455ebe46e31\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958480156013588828\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAtanackov\/status\/1958480156013588828\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow\">Atanackov shared <\/a>LASCO <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronagraph<\/a> footage of the same blast, marveling: &#8220;It has been such a long time since we have seen a beautiful CME like this one. What a beauty \u2026 look at that internal structure!&#8221; Atanackov wrote in a post on X. &#8220;If it were oriented towards us, we would be likely looking at an incoming severe geomagnetic storm &amp; likely some great mid latitude aurora deep into mid, maybe even low latitudes. Just hours later, SDO and GOES-SUVI recorded another eruption, this time from the sun&#8217;s northeastern limb. (Image credit: NOAA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"ea1ad7a2-461b-47b0-8f97-35e62145464a\">Solar prominences are enormous loops of hot plasma that erupt from the sun&#8217;s surface, tethered by magnetic fields. They can extend hundreds of thousands of miles into space, and when they destabilize, the trapped material can blast away as a CME, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/what-solar-prominence\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/what-solar-prominence\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the twin eruptions mark one of the most dramatic days of Solar Cycle 25 so far. While neither is heading our way, they will not spark <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">auroras<\/a> here on Earth, space weather watchers are buzzing over the spectacle. Vast fountains of plasma sculpted by the sun&#8217;s tangled magnetic fields, captured in exquisite detail by satellites.
