He was 51.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBrian Jost Reents, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Investigator of the Fulton County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office, confirmed Hinds\u2019 death to Rolling Stone. According to local news outlet <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantanewsfirst.com\/2025\/08\/21\/former-guitarist-co-founder-heavy-metal-band-mastodon-dies-atlanta-motorcycle-crash\/\">Atlanta News First<\/a>, Hinds was killed in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta when his Harley Davidson collided with a SUV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Atlanta Police Department added that the accident occurred around 11:35 p.m. \u201cUpon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male who was involved in the collision,\u201d the report stated. \u201cThe male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased.\u201d A preliminary investigation concluded that the driver of the SUV \u201cfailed to yield while turning left and collided\u201d into Hinds. \u201cThe investigation remains active at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHinds co-founded the Grammy-winning group in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. In March, the band announced that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mastodon-guitarist-brent-hinds-part-ways-1235292262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parted ways<\/a> with the guitarist. \u201cWe\u2019re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we\u2019ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,\u201d the band wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief,\u201d the band wrote on social media Thursday. \u201cLast night, Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we\u2019ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent\u2019s family, friends, and fans. So I was learning all this hillbilly music with my uncle, and then I focused on being an awesome guitar player. My mom would come in and say, \u2018Are you OK? You haven\u2019t been out of your room in two days.\u2019 I\u2019d be like, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not masturbating, I\u2019m playing guitar.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLeviathan, the band\u2019s critically acclaimed 2004 album, was named one of Rolling Stone\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/the-100-greatest-metal-albums-of-all-time-113614\/mastodon-leviathan-2004-193471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time<\/a>, with single \u201cBlood and Thunder\u201d earning a spot on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/100-greatest-heavy-metal-songs-1234688425\/blood-and-thunder-mastodon-1234689126\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMastodon were like sailors as we drove around and played basements and clubs for years,\u201d Tailor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moderndrummer.com\/2004\/05\/brann-dailor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>told\u00a0Modern Drummer<\/strong><\/a> of Leviathan. \u201cWe were on a quest for something that might not even be there, and we were sacrificing a lot by leaving our families and friends behind.
