That means roster cuts, but also potential additions for teams with positions still in limbo after training camp.

The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini reported that several teams are making calls in search of reinforcements at running back, including the New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.

Sources: Teams making calls in search of running back additions include the Saints, Browns and Chiefs.

— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) August 21, 2025

One name to keep an eye on is the Washington Commanders’ Brian Robinson Jr., who sat out of the team’s most recent preseason game as signs point toward the team moving on from the fourth-year back either via a trade or release.

Let’s look at the situations for the teams in question and why they might be in search of upgrades.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints want a backup plan if Alvin Kamara, the team’s top offensive weapon, happens to go down with an injury or needs a breather during a game.

Kendre Miller stands second on the depth chart, but he has not stayed healthy during his first two seasons in New Orleans. Notable names like Cam Akers and Clyde Edwards-Helaire also roam the depth chart. They’ve drifted around the league for a reason, though.

Also, Taysom Hill isn’t healthy after a 2024 knee injury, which eliminates a bowling ball rusher who could take direct snaps. — Larry Holder, memorabilia and collectibles writer

Cleveland Browns

The Browns need a bigger back with Quinshon Judkins still unsigned and away from the team. The Browns chose Judkins over TreVeyon Henderson in the draft in part because they viewed Judkins as a better scheme fit and better between-the-tackles runner.

Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson are both smaller, more passing-down-type players. Keep an eye on Audric Estime if he doesn’t stick in Denver. Estime played under new Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees at Notre Dame. — Zac Jackson, Browns beat writer

Kansas City Chiefs

Beyond starter Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs’ depth at running back is a mess. Veteran Kareem Hunt, 30, is more of a role player as a short-yardage specialist who isn’t likely to help create the big plays. Carson Steele and Elijah Mitchell have yet to prove much in camp, and rookie Brashard Smith is playing as a hybrid receiver/running back after playing wideout earlier in his college career.

Kansas City brought in former Commanders running back Michael Wiley recently, but the position remains unsettled, and the team still appears to be searching for upgrades. — Jesse Newell, Chiefs beat writer

(Photo of Alvin Kamara: Chris Graythen / Getty Images)

The final week of the preseason is upon us, and teams must finalize their 53-player active roster by…

[39
1544,29287,3570,9004,1232,62,67,132,68
0":"post-164527","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-nfl","8":"tag-cleveland-browns","9":"tag-fantasy-football","10":"tag-kansas-city-chiefs","11":"tag-new-orleans-saints","12":"tag-nfl","13":"tag-sports","14":"tag-united-states","15":"tag-unitedstates","16":"tag-us
["GET
