Dallas County\u2019s Expunction Expo may be able to help"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">People looking to clear their criminal records in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallascounty.org\/government\/district-clerk\/expunction-expo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas County can begin applying to the ninth annual Expunction Expo on July 8<\/a>, county officials announced Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Expunctions may be granted for those who were arrested but never charged or indicted, or in some cases, if a criminal charge was dismissed or a person was acquitted, pardoned or completed deferred adjudication. Criminal records often create a barrier to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/finding-jobs-with-criminal-record-hard-despite-millions-of-openings-rcna120082\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/finding-jobs-with-criminal-record-hard-despite-millions-of-openings-rcna120082\">employment<\/a>, higher education or military service. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The program \u2014 a partnership <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/courts\/2022\/07\/06\/dallas-county-expunction-expo-can-help-residents-clean-up-criminal-records\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">between the district attorney, district clerk, public defender\u2019s offices and community leaders<\/a> has granted nearly 3,000 expunctions since it began in 2017, according to the Dallas County district attorney\u2019s office. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe Expunction Expo remains a top priority for this office,\u201d DA John Creuzot said in a statement, \u201cand we are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that those legally entitled to clear their records have a fair and equal opportunity to do so.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Breaking News<\/p>\n<p class=\"dmnc_features-cta-social-cta-social-module__zWZy- mb-4\">Get the latest breaking news from North Texas and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Applicants can apply online starting July 8 at 8 a.m. and those who qualify will be notified no later than Aug. 29. From there, participants will be matched with a volunteer attorney who will help fill out and file court documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A record may be expunged if it meets the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"body-text-list\">\n<li>A person was arrested but a charge was never filed, no-billed by the grand jury or rejected by the DA\u2019s office. <\/li>\n<li>A felony, Class A or Class B misdemeanor charge was dismissed without any type of community supervision or probation before dismissal. <\/li>\n<li>A Class C misdemeanor was dismissed, or a person successfully completed Class C deferred adjudication and two years have passed since the dismissal. <\/li>\n<li>A person was acquitted by a judge, jury or appellate court and had no other charge stemming from the same arrest. <\/li>\n<li>A person was convicted of a crime but was later pardoned by the governor or president. <\/li>\n<li>A person was convicted before Sept. 1, 2021, for unlawfully carrying a weapon under section 46.02(a) of the penal code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A case is not eligible for an expunction if: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"body-text-list\">\n<li>The case is still pending.<\/li>\n<li>A person was convicted in the case, even if they only paid a fine.<\/li>\n<li>A person received probation, community supervision or deferred adjudication for a felony, Class A, or Class B misdemeanor \u2014 even if the case was later dismissed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Applications can be submitted online at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dallascounty.org\/expunction\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.dallascounty.org\/expunction<\/a>.
