\n\tMariah Carey<\/a> will receive the Video Vanguard Award and perform a career-spanning hits medley at the 2025 MTV VMAs<\/a>. The show is set to air live coast-to-coast on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m. ET\/5 p.m. PT on CBS, simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey, who famously doesn\u2019t believe in the construct of age \u2013 but who is 56 for those of us who do \u2013 will become the oldest recipient of the award to date, surpassing Richard Lester, director of The Beatles<\/a>\u2018 films A Hard Day\u2019s Night and Help!. Lester was 52 when he received the award on the inaugural VMAs in 1984. (In a way, it\u2019s more impressive that Carey is receiving the award 35 years into her career than if she had gotten it when she was in her first flush of stardom. It\u2019s a real achievement for Carey to have sustained her star power for so many years.)<\/p>\n

\n\tIt should also be noted that the recipients of the Video Vanguard Award have been moving up in age in recent years. Jennifer Lopez<\/a>, Missy Elliott<\/a> and Shakira<\/a> were all past 45 when they received the honor.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey will be the eighth consecutive recipient of the award who is a woman, following Rihanna<\/a> (2016), Pink<\/a> (2017), Lopez (2018), Elliott (2019), Nicki Minaj<\/a> (2022), Shakira (2023) and Katy Perry<\/a> (2024). (The award wasn\u2019t presented in the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.)<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey will return to the VMAs stage for the first time in 20 years. In 2005, she performed two smash hits \u2013 \u201cWe Belong Together\u201d and \u201cShake It Off\u201d \u2013 in a segment that also featured Jadakiss<\/a> and Jermaine Dupri<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey presented the Vanguard Award to LL COOL J<\/a> in 1997. Coincidentally, the rapper and actor is hosting this year\u2019s VMAs, which will air from UBS Arena in New York.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey made her VMAs debut in 1991 with a performance of \u201cEmotions.\u201d In 1998, Carey and Whitney Houston<\/a> opened the show in an iconic pop culture moment when the two \u201caccidentally\u201d wore the same dress. They then presented the first award of the night \u2013 best male video to Will Smith<\/a> for \u201cJust the Two of Us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMTV\u2019s press release announcing the award refers to it as the Video Vanguard Award twice and the Michael Jackson<\/a> Video Vanguard Award once. Carey and Jackson were both signed to Sony Music labels throughout the 1990s.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey has amassed 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, from \u201cVision of Love\u201d in June 1990 to \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You,\u201d which logged its most recent appearance at No. 1 in January 2025. That\u2019s more No. 1 hits than any other solo artist and is just one shy of the all-time record held by The Beatles. Impressively, she co-wrote 18 of those songs.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. She has been nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in each of the last two years, but has yet to receive that accolade. Such contemporaries as Houston, Janet Jackson<\/a> and George Michael<\/a>, who likewise weren\u2019t rock & roll in the traditional sense, have been admitted into the Hall, so Carey is likely to make it too eventually. <\/p>\n

\n\tCarey has had six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, from Mariah Carey in March 1991 to E=MC2 in May 2008. She has won five Grammys, including vocal performance honors in both pop and R&B.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey\u2019s 16th studio album Here for It All is set for release on Sept. 26. It includes her single \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d which is nominated for a VMA for best R&B this year. If she wins, it will (amazingly) be her first VMA won in competition.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his annual forecast<\/a> of who might get this year\u2019s Video Vanguard award, Billboard\u2019s Andrew Unterberger pegged Carey as this year\u2019s third-likeliest recipient (behind his top pick Miley Cyrus<\/a> and runner-up pick Ed Sheeran<\/a>). Unterberger wasn\u2019t working from a finite list of nominees. Theoretically anyone could receive the honor, making it impressive that he came so close.<\/p>\n

\n\tSaid Unterberger about Carey\u2019s chances: \u201cHas Mariah Carey really never won the Video Vanguard award? Forget that: Mariah Carey has still\u00a0never won a single Video Music Award, getting shut out to date in eight career nominations stretching back to 1996. She\u2019s up for a ninth in September, with \u2018Type Dangerous\u2019 nominated for best R&B video, but MTV could really make this wrong right by giving Mimi the Video Vanguard for her decades-spanning career as a music video superstar. She\u2019d be on the veteran side for the award at this point, but that didn\u2019t stop MTV from honoring Shakira two years ago, so perhaps there\u2019s still a chance for MC after all \u2014 and given the release of new album\u00a0Here for It All\u00a0later this September, now would be the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSabrina Carpenter<\/a>\u00a0is set to perform on the VMAs for the second year in a row. Alex Warren<\/a>,\u00a0Busta Rhymes<\/a>,\u00a0J Balvin<\/a> featuring DJ Snake<\/a>,\u00a0Ricky Martin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0sombr<\/a>\u00a0are also set to perform.<\/p>\n

\n\tBusta will receive the MTV VMA Rock the Bells Visionary\u00a0Award, presented by\u00a0host LL COOL J\u00a0(who had a hit in 1986 titled \u201cRock the Bells\u201d). Martin will be honored with the inaugural Latin Icon Award.<\/p>\n

\n\tLady Gaga<\/a>\u00a0leads the nominations\u00a0<\/a>for the 2025 MTV Video Music\u00a0Awards<\/a>\u00a0with 12 nods, followed closely by her \u201cDie With a Smile\u201d duet partner\u00a0Bruno Mars<\/a>, who has 11 nods. Other top contenders are Kendrick Lamar<\/a> (10), ROS\u00c9<\/a> and Carpenter\u00a0(eight each),\u00a0Ariana Grande<\/a> and The Weeknd<\/a>\u00a0(seven each) and\u00a0Billie Eilish<\/a> (six).<\/p>\n

\n\tThis will mark the first time the show has been\u00a0broadcast by CBS<\/a>. It will also simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe 2025\u00a0MTV VMAs<\/a>\u00a0are executive produced by Bruce Gillmer, Den of Thieves co-founder Jesse Ignjatovic, and Barb Bialkowski. Gunpowder & Sky CEO Van Toffler is producer. Alicia Portugal is co-executive producer. Jackie Barba is executive in charge of production. Wendy Plaut is executive in charge of celebrity talent.
