Born in Red Bay, Alabama, and raised in Mississippi, Lyman Corbitt \u201cMac\u201d McAnally Jr. told American Songwriter that he can\u2019t recall a time when he didn\u2019t hear music<\/a> in his head. In his professional life, he would put those melodies to paper, penning songs like Alabama\u2019s No. 1 hit \u201cOld Flame\u201d and Shenandoah\u2019s \u201cTwo Dozen Roses.\u201d Recently, Amy Grant and Mac McAnally wrapped up work on The Me That Remains, the contemporary Christian sensation\u2019s first non-holiday album in 12 years. The \u201cEl Shaddai\u201d singer, 64, paid tribute to her collaborator during the 18th ACM Honors Awards ceremony, where he accepted the prestigious Poet\u2019s Award.<\/p>\n

Amy Grant Praises \u201cHonest Observer\u201d Mac McAnally<\/p>\n

During a Wednesday (Aug. 20) ceremony at the Pinnacle in Nashville, Amy Grant honored Mac McAnally with a tender rendition of his 1992 song \u201cAll These Years.\u201d Originally recorded for his album Live And Learn, country music group Sawyer Brown took their version to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the ceremony, Grant admitted to Billboard<\/a> that she may struggle to get through her performance without crying. \u201cIt\u2019s just so much about human nature,\u201d she said. \u201cWe learn most of the best lessons the hard way, and this song is about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

McAnally, 68, took home the ACM Poet\u2019s Award, which he received \u201cfor outstanding and longstanding musical and\/or lyrical contributions\u201d during his nearly 50-year career. The Academy of Country Music gives \u201cspecial consideration\u201d to a song\u2019s impact on the culture of country music, according to its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s such an honest observer of life, and I love that,\u201d Amy Grant said of Mac McAnally.<\/p>\n

Amy Grant Has New Music Coming<\/p>\n

Ahead of the ACM Honors, Amy Grant revealed that Mac McAnally produced her 21st studio album, The Me That Remains. Arriving in January, the project marks her first non-Christmas album since 2013\u2019s How Mercy Looks From Here.<\/p>\n

Amy Grant and Mac McAnally co-wrote the album\u2019s title track, which Grant said was inspired by her \u201cmulti-year recovery\u201d from a traumatic 2022 bike accident<\/a>. McAnally hyped the project up during a recent interview<\/a> with Garden & Gun.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t even deserve to get to be associated with it, she\u2019s so good,\u201d McAnally declared, adding, \u201cMy standard line on Amy is that the most devout atheist in the world knows she\u2019s an angel.\u201d<\/p>\n
