Their death was recently discovered during the city health department&#8217;s ongoing investigation of the outbreak that began in late July, the agency said. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/health\/health-topics\/legionnaires-disease.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The department<\/a> reported a fifth death on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Officials said 111 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires&#8217; disease as of Thursday, two more than on Wednesday. Seven people are hospitalized, two fewer than the previous day, the department said. Fourteen people had been hospitalized on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The bacteria that causes Legionnaires\u2019 disease had been discovered in 12 cooling towers on 10 buildings, including a city-run hospital and sexual health clinic, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/about\/press\/pr2025\/nyc-health-provides-third-legionnaires-cluster-update.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health officials said<\/a>. Remediation efforts have since been completed on all of the cooling towers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a type of pneumonia that is caused by Legionella bacteria, which grow in warm water and spread through building water systems.
