The first season followed the titular lead, aka Christopher Smith (John Cena), as he transformed from an emotionally stunted, morally flexible killing machine into a complex hero filled with remorse for his past bad deeds. Along the way, the show deployed prolific profanity and extravagant blood and gore, but more to the point, it approached its characters not as high-achieving heroes but as struggling fuck-ups barely scraping by in the armpit of society.

For Season 2, “Peacemaker” turns the volume up even further on the adult content, with easily the most full-frontal nudity ever assembled in a live-action DC comics adaptation.

To get to this point, however, Peacemaker spends most of the Season 2 premiere stuck in a depression — over accidentally killing his brother when they were kids, over deliberately killing his (virulently racist white supremacist) father, Auggie (Robert Patrick), in the Season 1 finale — and over the ridicule he endures from the Justice Gang in the Season 2 premiere during his interview to join their ranks.

“I don’t want to be a joke anymore, Ads,” Chris tells his friend Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), as she drops him off for the interview. “This is all I’ve ever wanted, you know — to be a real hero.”

Given that Chris, Adebayo and their friends saved the world from an alien invasion at the end of Season 1, Adebayo thinks Chris has the job in the bag. “They’re going to be doing backflips to get you to join,” she says.

Instead, Justice Gang founder Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) and members Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) — who first appeared in Gunn’s July blockbuster “Superman” — immediately begin mocking Chris during the interview and ignoring most of what he has to say. Green Lantern cracks that one of Chris’ talents is “blowing dudes”; Lord says outright that Chris “sucks.” They think, because they’re behind soundproof glass, that Chris can’t hear them, but their microphones pick up everything they’re saying. A few nights earlier, Chris and Harcourt hooked up on a party boat, and Chris is keen to explore the relationship further. Harcourt is not.

“It was fine,” she says with a scowl. “It happened. Whatever. In a single cut, Chris’ drug binge transforms into a sex party; his home is filled with naked women and men dancing, kissing, and shagging in all combinations. Boobs and dicks undulate with wild abandon on bodies of every shape and color, underlining “Peacemaker” as a comic book adaptation far more interested in messy reality than physical perfection.

Chris, the only person still fully clothed, tries to enjoy himself, briefly enjoying attention from a male and female partier. But he’s just too sad and too numb. He winds up staggering back to his bedroom, where he opens the portal to his late father’s quantum unfolding storage area hidden inside a dimensional nodule.

It’s at this point that the plot that will fuel the rest of the season kicks into gear. When Chris opens the dimensional portal, it pings an alarm at A.R.G.U.S., which has been on high alert since the events of “Superman,” the climax of which involves Lex Luthor creating a dimensional rift that literally splits Metropolis in half.

More importantly for Chris, with Waller on the outs, A.R.G.U.S. is now run by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), a character who first appeared in animated form in DC Studios’ “Creature Commandos” in late 2024, and again in small supporting role in “Superman.” He’s also the father of Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman), the character Chris murdered at the end of Gunn’s 2021 feature film “The Suicide Squad,” and it seems Rick Sr. has developed a particular interest in Peacemaker’s activities.

(Technically, the new DC Universe doesn’t include “The Suicide Squad,” which was made under a different regime at DC Films, well before Gunn and Peter Safran took over and rebooted the DCU. Gunn has even said explicitly that the DCU starts with “Creature Commandos”; but since “Peacemaker” is a spin-off of “The Suicide Squad,” and “Peacemaker” is now part of the DCU, it seems Gunn is fine with selectively bringing parts of “The Suicide Squad” into the DCU. The wildest example of this meta-narrative convolution comes during the Season 1 recap that plays at the start of the episode. In the Season 1 finale, the Justice League from the 2017 movie shows up after Peacemaker and his friends have already saved the day. Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa even briefly reprise their respective roles as the Flash and Aquaman — alongside silhouettes of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. For the Season 1 recap, however, Gunn reshot this sequence, replacing the Justice League with the Justice Gang from “Superman,” with Merced and Fillion stepping in for Miller and Momoa — alongside silhouettes of David Corenswet’s Superman, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. This kind of cavalier retconning may cause hardcore canon-heads to have an aneurysm, but, c’mon: that’s funny!)

Anyway! Chris is fixated on his father’s dimensional portal for a good reason: Six months earlier, he stumbled upon a doorway in there to an alternate universe where his father was still alive and Peacemaker was considered a hero. Now, at rock bottom, Chris staggers back through that doorway and makes an even bigger discovery: His older brother, Kevin (David Denman), is also alive in this dimension. Kevin and Auggie, mistaking Chris for their dimension’s Chris, sit down with him for a drink and begin to reminisce. Chris learns they all fight crime together, and the world loves them for it. Auggie isn’t a cruel, withholding bigot, but a stable and loving parent.

When they go to bed, Chris finds his way into his counterpart’s bedroom, where he finds a framed photo of Other Chris with that universe’s Harcourt — and they look very much in love. At that moment, Other Chris, dressed as Peacemaker, finds Chris, and immediately attempts to kill him. Chris tries to escape into the quantum storage area, but Other Chris follows, and beats Chris within an inch of his life. At the last moment, when it looks like Chris is ready to give up and die, he instead activates Other Chris’ jet pack, and Other Chris thrown into a spike in the ceiling and impaled, killing him.

This fateful moment will most certainly inform the rest of the season, as the show tackles incisive questions about identity and fate and the road not traveled. Hopefully, there will also be time to explain what happened to all of Chris’ naked partiers.

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 2, Episode 1 of “Peacemaker,” currently streaming on…

[9
171,956,5234,58723,67,132,68
0":"post-165592","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-entertainment","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-james-gunn","10":"tag-john-cena","11":"tag-peacemaker","12":"tag-united-states","13":"tag-unitedstates","14":"tag-us
["GET
