UPDATE:<\/strong> Harmon was seen sitting on the bench with Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt in the fourth quarter of the KDKA broadcast<\/a>, and Missi Matthews reported that Harmon was able to walk back on the field. It seems as if the Steelers could\u2019ve avoided a serious injury to their first round pick, but we\u2019ll get an update from Mike Tomlin at the conclusion of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s out here now on the sideline, sitting on the bench now between Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt. The Steelers\u2019 locker room is on the opposite side of this sideline, he was able to walk out here in street clothes. We\u2019ll take that as a good update,\u201d Matthews said on the broadcast.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie DL Derrick Harmon suffered an apparent injury in the team\u2019s preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. He was shown on the KDKA broadcast with a towel over his head and on the cart.<\/p>\n

Harmon was also emotional as he got carted off the field.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a good sign that Harmon was on the cart, and the Steelers have high hopes for their first-round rookie this season. His reaction also isn\u2019t promising that it\u2019s just a minor injury. The team quickly ruled him out with a knee injury, per senior director of communications Burt Lauten<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If Harmon does have to miss time, it will be the second year in a row that the Steelers lost a first-round pick to a preseason injury, with OT Troy Fautanu suffering an injury last preseason before another knee injury in practice after playing in just one game.<\/p>\n

Harmon appeared to get his knee twisted at the end of the play that led to James Pierre\u2019s interception in the second quarter.<\/p>\n

Mike Tomlin said he had no update on Harmon during an interview on the KDKA broadcast<\/a> at halftime and said Harmon was still being evaluated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have an update right now. He\u2019s still being evaluated,\u201d Tomlin said.<\/p>\n

Harmon is slotted to start on Pittsburgh\u2019s defensive line along with Keeanu Benton and Cam Heyward, and if Harmon misses time, Pittsburgh\u2019s defensive line depth will be tested. Harmon got his first sack in Pittsburgh\u2019s second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.<\/p>\n

An injury to a rookie with high expectations is one of the last things you want to see in the preseason finale. Hopefully, the Steelers are just being cautious and Harmon\u2019s injury isn\u2019t serious.<\/p>\n

Coming into the 2025 NFL Draft, Harmon had some medical red flags due to a labral tear and partial rotator cuff tear in his shoulder. That hasn\u2019t slowed him down much, and while he missed one training camp practice and left another early, Harmon has mostly been a full go for the Steelers throughout their offseason work.<\/p>\n

The team\u2019s Week 1 game isn\u2019t until September 7, so Harmon would have some time to rest and rehab if the injury isn\u2019t too severe. But he won\u2019t return to tonight\u2019s game, and the Steelers will likely provide more information on Harmon\u2019s injury at the conclusion of the game.<\/p>\n
