{"id":166005,"date":"2025-08-22T08:16:16","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T08:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/166005\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T08:16:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T08:16:16","slug":"dramatic-rebound-for-southern-right-whale-numbers-along-great-australian-bight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/166005\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatic rebound for southern right whale numbers along Great Australian Bight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Researchers say it has been one of the best years in recent history for southern right whale numbers in the Great Australian Bight (GAB).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An annual count of the species on Australia&#8217;s southern coast has found the mammals&#8217; numbers are the strongest they have been in almost a decade, despite historical declines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Researchers counted 140 whales \u2014 mostly mothers and their calves \u2014 at Head of Bight, the northernmost point of the GAB and the area endangered southern right whales visit every year to give birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A further 18 were found in nearby Fowlers Bay, in the far west of South Australia, and another eight at Encounter Bay on the Fleurieu Peninsula, south of Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"two black and white southern right whales, partially underwater.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/7cb661ca84b4b6eac7e9a24b8af3306b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Southern right whales play at Head of Bight earlier this month. (Supplied: Richard Twist\/ Current Environmental)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last year, there were 114 whales at Head of Bight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Researchers said this year&#8217;s results were a relief because there had been signs of declines in births in recent years, after decades of improvement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australian Right Whale Research Program chief scientist Claire Charlton said it was a relief for the population that it was a good year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t had numbers this strong since 2016, so it&#8217;s really exciting,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While a toxic algal bloom <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-23\/sa-toxic-algal-bloom-explained\/105560008\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105560008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is having a devastating effect on marine life<\/a> in some areas of South Australia&#8217;s coast, it has not yet been detected in the far west of the state where most whales congregate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The official advice is that the bloom, Karenia mikimotoi, is not toxic to mammals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, dead sea mammals have been found washed up along some parts of the coast, including dolphins and sea lions.<\/p>\n<p>From sleeping bags to drones and Starlink<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This year marks 30 years since the establishment of the Great Australian Bight Marine Reserve \u2014 a vast protected ocean area which stretches across South Australia and Western Australia&#8217;s coastlines that was created in 1995 largely to foster research on southern right whales.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman smiling at the camera, wearing sunglasses, and standing in front of water. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/be73386ad2c3da4cea03b5e66c37389c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Claire Charlton says while numbers are strong this year, she has long-term concerns.
