Questions and answers have been edited for clarity and brevity.

Q: The NBA’s two newest arenas were both privately financed by the team owners. Why aren’t the Spurs owners looking to do the same?

Holt: Those are two of the biggest markets in the NBA and two of the biggest markets from a financial revenue size in all of sports. We love San Antonio – we think our region is growing and maturing and developing really fast. But we’re still 26th or 27th out of the 30 teams around market size. There’s a fundamental, significant difference between us and them. Of the 14 bottom-ranked NBA teams as far as market size, every single one of them has public financing at an average rate of 70% public financed funds, 30% private.

Q: You’ve said the Spurs will contribute “hundreds of millions of dollars” toward the arena’s estimated $1.5B cost. Can you narrow down that figure?

Holt: The issue at hand is that there still needs to be clarity to figure out what funding sources are available and how much. What the rodeo and the county need at the Frost Bank Center is still undetermined, as is the actual cost of the arena. Although there is a range, it’s still too broad of a range to say here is each person’s dedicated funding mechanism.

Q: You’ve said downtown is the best option for a new location versus other locations you explored. Why so?

Holt: The first is accessibility. It’s our urban core, it’s right in the middle of our city. Our city has grown significantly through sprawl. Having a center that is more accessible from a transportation standpoint is a guiding principle. The second one is the velocity that is already happening with our urban core. … The last piece is just the overall global trends that are happening around place-making and city-building and community-building (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 6/25).

MARVELOUS PLAN: Iszler & Smith in a separate piece noted San Antonio City staff, Spurs execs and third-party development firms and consultants have been “piecing the plan together” for Project Marvel behind closed doors and are “just now inviting residents to weigh in at a series of multi-day events.” The sessions come weeks before the City Council and Bexar County Commissioners Court could each call elections to pay for parts of the massive undertaking. The plan to date includes a “new Spurs arena, an expanded Convention Center, a second Convention Center hotel, a renovated Alamodome” and a reconfigured John H. Wood Jr. federal courthouse surrounded by “new apartments, restaurants and parks.” A land bridge above Interstate 37 could “connect the Alamodome to the arena.” The objective of the meetings is to create “guiding principles” based on residents’ opinions to present to Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and City Council.
