For comparison, its depth is about two-and-a-half times the height of One World Trade Center in New York City, which is 1,776 feet, according to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/cvo\/science\/axial-seamount#overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.S. Geological Survey;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s the most active submarine volcano in the northeast Pacific. In the last 30 years that it\u2019s been monitored, three eruptions have occurred: in 1998, 2011 and 2015, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/axial.ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/axial_blog.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to researchers;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to researchers<\/a> Bill Chadwick at Oregon State University and Scott Nooner at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOur forecast of an eruption at Axial Seamount by the end of the year still stands, but I have to say nothing looks imminent,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/nothing-looks-imminent-oregon-underwater-233052559.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chadwick told KOIN;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chadwick told KOIN<\/a> on Wednesday. Yahoo contacted Chadwick for an updated confirmation of this assessment and is awaiting a response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Here\u2019s what else to know about the underwater volcano.<\/p>\n<p>Does the underwater volcanic eruption pose a serious threat?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No. Due to the Axial Seamount\u2019s great depth underwater, combined with its relatively gentle lava flow style, it doesn\u2019t pose a threat to human life, ocean travel or property, the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/cvo\/science\/axial-seamount\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.S. Geological Survey says;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.S. Geological Survey says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cFor the size of eruptions we\u2019ve seen in the last 20 years \u2026 if you were on top of it on a boat, you would never know it,\u201d Chadwick previously <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opb.org\/article\/2025\/05\/19\/axial-seamount-eruption-dont-panic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told local media;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, the next eruption will help researchers better understand and forecast how volcanoes erupt on land.<\/p>\n<p>Why is it forecast to erupt this year?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Inflation in an underwater volcano happens when magma accumulates below the sea floor and pushes the surface of the volcano upward, Chadwick explained at a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Li5VRCFa2zE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2024 seminar;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2024 seminar<\/a>. One of the signs that an eruption of Axial Seamount might happen this year is that the volcano reached the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/environment\/2025\/01\/scientists-predict-the-pacific-northwests-most-active-undersea-volcano-will-erupt-this-year.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:same inflation levels;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">same inflation levels<\/a> from when it erupted in 2015, back in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But as of July, \u201cthe rate of inflation has been slowly decreasing all year,\u201d Chadwick <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/axial.ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/axial_blog.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wrote in a blog;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wrote in a blog<\/a> on the OSU website that details the eruption forecast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers also monitor seismic activity near the volcano through instruments and cables that extend from the U.S. coast. (NOAA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Additionally, in July, the tsunami wave from the 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia\u2019s Kamchatka Peninsula &#8220;triggered the automated alerts we have in place to notify us when an eruption might be starting,\u201d even though it wasn\u2019t actually an eruption, according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/axial.ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/axial_blog.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chadwick\u2019s blog post;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chadwick\u2019s blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe can only wait and see, but nothing seems imminent at the moment since the rate of unrest keeps wavering up and down, up and down,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/axial.ceoas.oregonstate.edu\/axial_blog.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chadwick writes;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chadwick writes<\/a>. \u201cOf course, we don\u2019t really know what it will take to trigger the next eruption and exactly when that will happen.
