Here\u2019s what registered dietitians and environmental sustainability experts have to say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the difference in how they\u2019re raised?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that farmed salmon and wild salmon have some distinct differences. Wild salmon live in oceans, rivers and streams, and typically travel far distances and eat a diet of smaller fish and marine organisms. Farmed salmon is generally higher in fat than wild salmon, but it\u2019s also loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. And even among farmed salmon, the vitamin D content varies greatly from one variety to another, likely due to the food that the salmon eats. \u201cWild salmon can have substantially more vitamin D because they are feeding on krill and small fish,\u201d Nathan said. \u201cIn contrast, farm-raised salmon are dependent on the composition and fortification of the feed provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While wild salmon tends to be much richer in vitamin D than farmed salmon, the exact amount varies depending on where the fish comes from. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31036792\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"2019 study published in the journal \u201d\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31036792\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"13\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2019 study published in the journal \u201dNutrients<\/a>,\u201d wild salmon caught in the Baltic Sea contained about 18.5 micrograms (\u00b5g) of vitamin D per 100 grams of fish (that\u2019s roughly a 3.5-ounce serving). Meanwhile, wild salmon from the North Sea had about half that \u2014 9.4 \u00b5g per 100 grams. By comparison, farmed salmon contained anywhere from about 3 to 9.5 \u00b5g per 100 grams. However, many governments, including the United States, have set <a href=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/community-and-environment\/food\/fish\/farmed-salmon\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"regulatory limits\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/doh.wa.gov\/community-and-environment\/food\/fish\/farmed-salmon\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"22\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulatory limits<\/a> requiring that salmon produced in these regions do not exceed certain levels of PCBs.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on where your farmed salmon is sourced and the practices of the fish farm, its feed may <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6133359\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"contain antibiotics\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6133359\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"23\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contain antibiotics<\/a>. These, along with pesticides, are sometimes used to prevent infections that can easily spread in crowded pens. But those same antibiotics can have a negative impact on the environment and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30094087\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"human health\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30094087\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"24\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human health<\/a>, including an increased risk of antibiotic resistance and gut health problems. Many governments, including the United States, Canada and Norway, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=38395X987171&amp;xs=1&amp;xcust=687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Flink.springer.com%2Farticle%2F10.1007%2Fs10499-024-01614-0\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"regulate and limit antibiotic use in aquaculture\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=38395X987171&amp;xs=1&amp;xcust=687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Flink.springer.com%2Farticle%2F10.1007%2Fs10499-024-01614-0\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"25\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regulate and limit antibiotic use in aquaculture<\/a>, but others do not, so you may want to pay attention to where your salmon came from (hang tight \u2014 we\u2019ll outline some helpful resources for that in the next section). <\/p>\n<p><strong>Is farmed salmon environmentally sustainable?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to environmental sustainability experts, it depends. \u201cFrom an environmental perspective, farmed salmon isn\u2019t inherently good or bad \u2014 it depends entirely on how it\u2019s farmed,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedbyblue.org\/about\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Jennifer Bushman\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.fedbyblue.org\/about\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Bushman<\/a>, a sustainable seafood expert and executive director of Fed by Blue. <\/p>\n<p>Salmon farming tends to come with a number of environmental drawbacks, including pollution, overcrowding, transfer of disease to wild salmon populations, and unsustainable sourcing of feed. \u201cThe majority of farmed salmon today is not raised under environmentally responsible or ethical conditions,\u201d Bushman added. <\/p>\n<p>Still, there are some salmon farms out there operating more responsibly. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kvaroyarctic.com\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Kvar\u00f8y Arctic\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"http:\/\/www.kvaroyarctic.com\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"27\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kvar\u00f8y Arctic<\/a> is a great example \u2014 they are a third-generation family farm in the strong, cold currents of Norway\u2019s Arctic Circle, with low stocking densities, no antibiotics, and a focus on sustainable feed,\u201d Bushman said. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/orakingsalmon.co.nz\/\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"\u014cra King\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/orakingsalmon.co.nz\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"28\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u014cra King<\/a>, in New Zealand, is another standout. They raise king salmon with incredibly high environmental and welfare standards, and you can taste the difference.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Keeping an eye out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308597X1830842X\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"certification labels\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"687ff7e4e4b0f277db44b5cb\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308597X1830842X\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">certification labels<\/a> from trusted third-party groups can be helpful if you\u2019re looking to be environmentally conscious as you shop. not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From a nutrition or cost perspective, farmed salmon can be a solid food choice with numerous potential health benefits. \u201cCold water fish, such as salmon, is often considered a superfood because of its high nutrient content for the calories it provides,\u201d Nathan said. \u201cWild salmon may be higher in vitamin D, lower in calories, and lower in saturated fat, [but] farm-raised salmon can still pack a nutritious punch worth your money, especially when sourced from responsibly managed farms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As she noted, the environmental concerns of many salmon farming operations are also worth considering. \u201cWhen buying farmed fish, look for those that are grown using sustainable practices,\u201d Salge Blake said. \u201c<a
