{"id":167043,"date":"2025-08-22T17:41:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167043\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T17:41:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T17:41:15","slug":"canada-drops-many-of-its-retaliatory-tariffs-on-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167043\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada drops many of its retaliatory tariffs on the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks at a press conference about recognizing Palestinian statehood, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, July 30, 2025.  <\/p>\n<p>Patrick Doyle | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Canada removed many of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/12\/canada-tariffs-steel-aluminum-trump-computers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retaliatory tariffs<\/a> on the U.S. on Friday, marking a significant step forward in the two countries&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/03\/canada-trump-trade-tariffs-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relationship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canada in March imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/04\/canadas-retaliatory-tariffs-on-us-goods-to-start-tuesday-trudeau.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counter-tariffs<\/a> of 25%<strong> <\/strong>on a long list of U.S. products that fall in line with the North American trade deal after the U.S. had announced 25% duties on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/12\/trumps-25percent-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminum-imports-take-effect.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steel and aluminum<\/a>. Notably, Canada&#8217;s 25% tariffs on U.S. autos, steel and aluminum will remain in place for now, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a press conference Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The change will go into effect on Sept. 1, Carney added, saying he believes Canada has the best trade deal out of all of the countries working with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we work intensively with the United States, our focus is squarely on the strategic sectors,&#8221; Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>A White House official told NBC News that Canada&#8217;s move was &#8220;long overdue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We look forward to continuing our discussions with Canada on the Administration&#8217;s trade and national security concerns,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC politics coverage<\/p>\n<p>Friday&#8217;s announcement follows a phone call between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/23\/trump-canada-tariffs-small-business-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carney<\/a> and President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>, the first known call between the two since failed talks before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/01\/trumps-tariffs-rekindle-global-trade-tensions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aug. 1 tariff deadline<\/a>. A readout of the Thursday call from Carney&#8217;s office called the conversation &#8220;productive and wide-ranging,&#8221; with both leaders agreeing to reconvene soon.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Friday that Trump assured him that dropping retaliatory tariffs will kick-start negotiations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which Trump negotiated during his first term, is scheduled to undergo a review later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Canada was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/04\/canadas-retaliatory-tariffs-on-us-goods-to-start-tuesday-trudeau.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swift to impose<\/a> its counter-tariffs on the U.S. on CA$30 billion, or US$21.7 billion, worth of U.S. goods under then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
