{"id":167229,"date":"2025-08-22T19:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T19:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167229\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T19:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T19:18:11","slug":"east-los-angeles-man-sentenced-to-150-years-to-life-in-triple-murder-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167229\/","title":{"rendered":"East Los Angeles Man Sentenced to 150 Years to Life in Triple Murder Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An East Los Angeles man was sentenced Friday to 150 years to life behind bars for fatally shooting two men and a woman in his neighborhood over a four-year period \u2014 a killing spree prosecutors said was sparked by his belief the victims had disrespected him.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Velasquez, 35, was found guilty Wednesday of three counts of first-degree murder after a downtown Los Angeles jury deliberated about 5 1\/2 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors also found true allegations that the defendant personally used a firearm in the Feb. 11, 2014, killing of Jesse Avalos; the July 6, 2015, slaying of Eduardo Robles; and the April 22, 2018, killing of Amanda Nicole Lopez.<\/p>\n<p>Velasquez was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge Ronald Coen.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant\u2019s father, Manuel Velasquez, 55, pleaded no contest in February to voluntary manslaughter in connection with one of the killings, along with being an accessory after the fact. He was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in state prison, according to Deputy District Attorney Catherine Mariano.<\/p>\n<p>In her closing argument, the prosecutor told jurors that Anthony Velasquez \u201ctargeted, ambushed and killed three different people \u2026 people he felt disrespected (by) in one way or another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy district attorney urged the panel to consider the physical evidence, items found in his house and \u201call of the incriminating statements\u201d he made during an undercover jailhouse operation and to \u201chold the defendant accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defense attorney Leslie Ann Boyce countered that the facts of the case supported her client being acquitted in all three killings.<\/p>\n<p>Velasquez\u2019s lawyer called the killings \u201cheinous\u201d and \u201ctragic,\u201d but told jurors that it would be a \u201cgreater tragedy to hold someone accountable\u201d who was not responsible for the murders.<\/p>\n<p>She urged jurors to consider the killings as \u201cthree separate crimes,\u201d calling it an \u201cI.D. case\u201d that the prosecution had not proven.<\/p>\n<p>In her rebuttal argument, Deputy District Attorney Negin Mostadim countered that \u201cthe evidence is that he is responsible and he is involved in all of these murders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avalos, 33, was found shot to death in the 4800 block of Telegraph Road, adjacent to the Santa Ana (5) Freeway and Bristow Park in Commerce. He had received a call from an acquaintance asking him to go to the location to jump-start a vehicle, and went there to help, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department Capt.
