{"id":167528,"date":"2025-08-22T22:00:21","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T22:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167528\/"},"modified":"2025-08-22T22:00:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T22:00:21","slug":"multiple-fatalities-reported-in-tourist-bus-crash-in-new-york-state-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/167528\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple fatalities reported in tourist bus crash in New York state | New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A crash in upstate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> involving a tourist bus on its way back from a trip to Niagara Falls caused multiple deaths on Friday, including at least one child, and passengers remained trapped in the wreckage during the afternoon, according to law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The bus, which had about 50 passengers onboard, was traveling eastbound when it apparently lost control on Interstate 90 near the Pembroke exit, roughly 25 miles (40km) east of Buffalo. It went into the median and then ended up in a ditch on the right side of the road, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/new-york\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a> state trooper James O\u2019Callaghan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Callaghan told reporters at the scene that \u201cthe bus did roll\u201d and most people had not been wearing seat belts. People inside were ejected as the windows shattered. \u201cThere were multiple ejections,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were multiple people trapped and there\u2019s multiple fatalities, and this includes children as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The driver survived. \u201cThe driver is alive and well,\u201d O\u2019Callaghan said. \u201cWe\u2019re working with him. We believe we have a good idea of what happened, why the bus lost control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He did not provide further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Photos from witnesses showed the bus tipped on its side near the road, with emergency crews and medical helicopters rushing victims to hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere was glass all over the road and people\u2019s stuff all over the road,\u201d Powell Stephens of Medina told the <a href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/news\/local\/article_e978bdba-1227-4bbf-b0ca-00f18fa393ac.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buffalo News<\/a> after passing the scene. \u201cWindows were all shattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The tour bus was heading back to New York City from the famous falls on the US-Canada border, when it crashed between Buffalo and Rochester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A tractor trailer was also involved and the number of victims has yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Callaghan said the tourists were chiefly of Indian, Chinese and Filipino origin, and officials were trying to get interpreters to the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The interstate highway was blocked, and O\u2019Callaghan said there were multiple entrapments and people were being taken to local hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mercy Flight, the regional air ambulance service, confirmed that three of its helicopters transported crash victims to hospitals. Erie county medical center (ECMC) reported having at least eight patients by 2.10pm local time, though the total number of injuries was not immediately released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Additional helicopters and ambulances from surrounding areas were called in, according to Margaret Ferrentino, the Mercy Flight president.\u201cIt\u2019s a very active scene,\u201d Ferrentino told the Associated Press. \u201cAt this time we\u2019re praying for the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The New York State Thruway Authority announced that a significant section of the highway was shut down in both directions. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kathy Hochul, the New York governor, wrote on X that she had been updated on \u201cthe tragic tour bus accident\u201d \u2013 and that her office was coordinating with law enforcement and local agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Letitia James, the attorney general, also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewYorkStateAG\/status\/1958949789430948259\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted<\/a> on X: \u201cThis bus crash is heartbreaking, and I\u2019m praying for everyone [affected].
