{"id":169399,"date":"2025-08-23T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/169399\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T15:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T15:00:13","slug":"the-padres-arent-dead-and-the-dodgers-still-have-plenty-to-lose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/169399\/","title":{"rendered":"The Padres aren&#8217;t dead, and the Dodgers still have plenty to lose"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SAN DIEGO\u00a0\u2014\u00a0The home team was one strike from victory Friday night, when the Petco Park video board suddenly erupted in hues of pink and mint, flashing the preferred accompaniment to any game against the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers<\/a>: BEAT LA.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the 102-mph fastball, then a swing and a miss, and the San Diego Padres had indeed beaten the Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>For Dodgers fans who thought the National League West had been won last weekend at Dodger Stadium, this just in from San Diego: The NL West is tied.<\/p>\n<p>These were words in this publication <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-18\/dodgers-prove-better-than-padres-series-sweep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just five days ago<\/a>: \u201cThe Dodgers now lead the National League West by two games, but it feels like 20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers had just swept the Padres, their only competition for the division title. The Dodgers were 8-2 against the Padres this season. There was a blue wave of emotion. The thing that happened last is the thing you remember best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s natural,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-22\/dodgers-outfield-defensive-struggles-options\" data-autoplayable-video=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers manager Dave Roberts<\/a> said. \u201cThat\u2019s the great thing about fandom. People get excited. That\u2019s a great thing about sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The feeling in the clubhouse last weekend?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn here? We played a great series, but there\u2019s still a lot of baseball left to play,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t going to be won or lost then, and it\u2019s not going to be won or lost this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is not with the emotion. The trouble is with the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The number of games left after this weekend: 31. The number of Dodgers-Padres games left after this weekend: 0.<\/p>\n<p>This is baseball\u2019s best rivalry, with a division title and potential first-round playoff bye on the line. The Dodgers and Padres should be facing each other to wrap up the season, with all that emotion bursting forth.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Dodgers finish the regular season against another traditional rival, the (checks notes) Seattle Mariners.<\/p>\n<p>           <img id=\"yt-img-ZVcTW3COX7g\" class=\"absolute\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1755961211_848_hqdefault.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/>                 <\/p>\n<p>There has been plenty of emotion among the Dodgers and Padres fan bases already this year, mostly in the form of angst.<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers won the winter, and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2025-02-01\/san-diego-padres-ownership-dispute-fans-dodgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Padres fans wondered<\/a> why their team was not keeping up with the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Padres won the trade deadline, and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-01\/andrew-friedman-whiffs-dodgers-trade-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers fans wondered<\/a> why their team was not keeping up with the competition.<\/p>\n<p>For the Dodgers, the cliche is about to be put to a real-life test: Getting a player off the injured list is just like getting a player in a trade.<\/p>\n<p>Reliever <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-07-22\/tanner-scott-dodgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tanner Scott<\/a> was activated Friday. Reliever <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-01-31\/dodgers-kirby-yates-deal-shore-up-pitching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kirby Yates<\/a> could be activated as soon as Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Infielder\/outfielder <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/newsletter\/2025-06-24\/kike-hernandez-pitching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kik\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a> could be activated next week, followed in some order by relievers <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-08-15\/michael-kopech-dodgers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Kopech<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-12\/dodgers-bullpen-brock-stewart-tony-gonsolin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brock Stewart<\/a>, infielder\/outfielder <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-05-16\/dodgers-hyeseong-kim-roster-tommy-edman-return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyeseong Kim<\/a>, infielder\/outfielder <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2024-10-01\/dodgers-tommy-edman-utility-man-versatility-trade-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tommy Edman<\/a> and third baseman <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-16\/max-muncy-injury-impact-dodgers-hitters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Muncy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, infielder <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-07-28\/alex-freeland-dodgers-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Freeland<\/a> hit his first major league home run, but infielder Buddy Kennedy (.287 OPS) went hitless, and the Dodgers burned their backup catcher to bat for him. Haffey \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our club right now,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cWe have guys coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a hot August night, Petco Park was its usual lively self, with its usual sellout crowd, with Dodgers fans drowning out chants of \u201cLet\u2019s Go Padres\u201d and Padres fans returning the favor at the sound of \u201cLet\u2019s Go Dodgers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid intensity fit for October, the Dodgers and Padres each let a strong starting pitcher \u2014 Blake Snell for L.A., Yu Darvish for San Diego \u2014 continue rather than reflexively remove him for the third time through the lineup.<\/p>\n<p>How do you win in October, with pitchers like Snell and Darvish lined up?<\/p>\n<p>Is it with the home run?<\/p>\n<p>Only one major league team has more home runs than the Dodgers. The Dodgers scored their only run Friday on a home run.<\/p>\n<p>Is it with small ball?<\/p>\n<p>Only one major league team has fewer home runs than the Padres. The Padres scored both their runs in one inning Friday, with a rally that included three singles, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.<\/p>\n<p>The Padres dropped three sacrifice bunts Friday. They have 40 this season, the most in the majors. The Dodgers have eight, the fewest of any NL team.<\/p>\n<p>           <img id=\"yt-img-JJAOSwmidlE\" class=\"absolute\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/JJAOSwmidlE\/hqdefault.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/>                 <\/p>\n<p>Before the game, I spoke with Mason Miller, the former Athletics All-Star closer turned  Padres eighth-inning setup man. To this point in his career, Miller said, the biggest game of his career has been closing the A\u2019s final game in Oakland last September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I said it after that game: until I play in the playoffs, that will probably be my all-time baseball memory,\u201d Miller said. \u201cNow it doesn\u2019t seem like I\u2019ll have to wait that much longer to get that playoff taste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not much longer at all. As of Friday morning, Baseball Prospectus put the Dodgers\u2019 chance of making the playoffs at 99.8% and the Padres\u2019 chance at 99.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this weekend won\u2019t mark the last Dodgers-Padres game this season.
