ST. PETERSBURG \u2014 Late Tuesday night, across the street from the empty husk of Tropicana Field<\/a>, a new pastime lured about 200 people to drink and jeer and scream in unison at Ferg\u2019s Sports Bar and Grill.<\/p>\n

The mostly-female crowd crammed into folding chairs and metal bleachers to watch drama unfold on a glowing 18- by 12-foot screen. They downed beers and chicken wings in between clapping or clutching their faces in agony. Occasionally, they booed. This is a sports bar, after all. <\/p>\n

Sorry to the Tampa Bay Rays, but there\u2019s a new game in town: \u201cLove Island USA\u201d fever has taken over bars, restaurants and clubs across Tampa and St. Pete. It helps that a local guy, University of Tampa graduate-turned-Airbnb host TJ Palma<\/a>, flew all the way to Fiji to join the show midway through the season.<\/p>\n

The seventh season of \u201cLove Island USA,\u201d inspired by the original United Kingdom series, broke records this month with 1.2 billion minutes streamed in nine days. According to Deadline, the show is the second-most-watched streaming show on television<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For the uninitiated, this reality dating show shares many similarities to organized sports. Instead of a stadium, the action takes place in a neon-soaked villa in the South Pacific. There are players to root for, in the form of bikini-clad \u201cislanders\u201d who fight and make up and make out in the pursuit of finding a partner. Or, you know, social media fame. <\/p>\n

Much like Major League Baseball, there are hours and hours of content: For nearly two months, episodes air every night but Wednesdays. <\/p>\n

The biggest link between sports and \u201cLove Island\u201d? Both are best consumed with a cohort of likeminded individuals, preferably while sloshed. <\/p>\n

Simultaneous to the Ferg\u2019s fiesta on Tuesday night, fans tuned in at a Water Street pizza joint<\/a>, a nightclub by Tampa\u2019s University Mall<\/a> and a glamping-themed bar<\/a> in downtown St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

At 511 Franklin in Tampa<\/a>, ladies squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder to view the action unfolding on a wall of screens. They downed half-off drinks and themed cocktails like the \u201cSoul Ties Spritz\u201d and the \u201cShoulda, Huda, Woulda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen\u2019s NFL,\u201d said the caption in an Instagram story reposted by the bar. <\/p>\n

\u201cSounds like game 7 in here,\u201d read another, which showed the horde hooting, clapping and cackling during a surprise dumping. <\/p>\n

Carrollwood-based influencer Zavier Torrence<\/a> gets some of the credit for making this happen. Torrence grew his following on TikTok by uplifting Tampa Bay businesses and events. A video he posted last week, which urged local bar owners to consider themed watch parties, has over 30,000 views<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cLove Island is like the hottest TV show out on television right now. Everyone is talking about it,\u201d Torrence, 25, says in the video. \u201cI don\u2019t think bars understand the power that they would have if they were to just post a Love Island theme night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Torrence told the Tampa Bay Times that multiple businesses, including 3 Corners Pizza and American Social, reached out to schedule events after seeing the video. He spent Tuesday night soaking in the show at Ferg\u2019s with friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely a sport,\u201d said Torrence, who compared the \u201cLove Island\u201d finale to the Super Bowl. \u201cYou have your opinions. You\u2019re locked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ten days ago, Mark Ferguson had no idea what \u201cLove Island USA\u201d was. Then the phone calls started. <\/p>\n

\u201cMore of my friends said, \u2018Hey, my girlfriend wants to watch this, are you going to be showing it?,\u2019\u201d said Ferguson, who owns Ferg\u2019s. <\/p>\n

Since Tropicana Field lost its top, Ferguson has been looking for creative ways to make up for lost game day revenue<\/a>. In the patio area out back, which once housed a pirate ship<\/a>, Ferguson added a concert stage with a jumbo screen. His event calendar includes farmers markets, a fishing tournament, 1980s cover bands and \u201cmidget wrestling.\u201d Over the next few weeks, there will also be \u201cLove Island USA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor a normal Tuesday, it doubled our sales,\u201c Ferguson said.<\/p>\n

At Ferg\u2019s, the crowd was primarily women in their 20s and 30s, plus the men who support them.<\/p>\n

Together, they rolled their eyes at cheesy pickup lines and cringed when one islander dangled her feet into a swimming pool without removing her high heels. In between seltzers, others contemplated just how much filler and Botox should legally be allowed to be injected into one\u2019s face. <\/p>\n

Some shook their heads at Tampa competitor Palma, who committed a faux pas during a recent kissing contest. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think what messed him up was he was harsh rating the girls\u2019 kisses,\u201d Torrence explained. <\/p>\n

Maybe Palma can turn it around by the next watch party. <\/p>\n

And if not? He\u2019ll be returning to plenty of \u201cLove Island USA\u201d back home in Tampa.<\/p>\n

La La\u2019s Sangria Bar<\/b> in Tampa is offering drink deals from 8 to 11 p.m. today. The first 20 guests receive a free themed cocktail.<\/p>\n

The Patio<\/b> in Palma Ceia is hosting weekly parties on Thursday nights. The first 50 guests today get a free espresso martini.<\/p>\n

American Social<\/b>: The Tampa restaurant is hosting a watch party starting 8 p.m. June 30, with exclusive \u201cLove Island USA\u201d food and drinks.<\/p>\n

MacDinton\u2019s Irish Pub in SoHo<\/b>: <\/b>\u201cLove Island USA\u201d will air here every Monday night. Drinks are free between 8 and 9 p.m.; bottles of champagne cost $10.<\/p>\n

Glamper in St. Petersburg<\/b>: \u201cLove Island USA\u201d nights take place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Specials include $8 \u201cbombshell shots.\u201d <\/p>\n

3 Corners Pizza<\/b>: Tuesday nights at the Water Street restaurant feature themed island cocktails and a \u201cvilla menu.\u201d The festivities begin at 8 p.m. with a pre-show challenge. Stick around for giveaways and a debriefing. <\/p>\n
