As for the rest of us still squeezing out all that summer has to offer, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/lake-michigan-bacteria-contamination-beaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jumping in the lake<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/what-to-do-in-chicago-this-weekend-house-music-fest-john-legend-at-ravinia-and-the-triathlon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">going to see a concert<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/20\/chicago-artist-terrible-portraits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">getting a terrible portrait<\/a> done at the Logan Square farmers market. But before you start figuring out your weekend plans, here\u2019s the rundown on what you may have missed in the news.<\/p>\n<p>The week started off on a positive note for the Chicago Bears, who won their preseason game Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/18\/chicago-bears-brad-biggs-10-thoughts-buffalo-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dominant 38-0 victory.<\/a> The good news kept flowing throughout the week, with the team announcing a two-year, $10 million contract extension for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/20\/chicago-bears-tyson-bagent-contract-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">backup quarterback Tyson Bagent<\/a> on Wednesday and securing another victory in Friday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/chicago-bears-preseason-kansas-city-chiefs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">preseason finale,<\/a> beating the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.<\/p>\n<p>Across the globe, parts of Gaza are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/gaza-famine-declared\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">officially in famine<\/a>, according to the world\u2019s leading authority on food crises. Meanwhile, at the White House, President Donald Trump met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/18\/zelenskyy-trump-russia-ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/a> and other European leaders to discuss the prospect of ending Russia\u2019s three-year war in Ukraine. Plus, millions of U.S. visa holders could be at risk after the Trump administration said Thursday that it\u2019s reviewing their records for offenses that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/us-visa-holders-deportation-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could warrant deportation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s bid to crack down on crime in Washington, D.C., also continued this week, with nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/national-guard-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,000 National Guard troops<\/a> now stationed in the city. On Friday, Trump suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/trump-chicago-crackdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago would be the next target<\/a> for federal intervention, provoking a response from Mayor Brandon Johnson and Gov. JB Pritzker, who called the proposed move an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/22\/johnson-and-pritzker-blast-as-illegal-trumps-suggestion-hell-send-the-national-guard-to-chicago-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cauthoritarian power grab.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other news, the Regional Transit Authority announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/rta-metra-pace-cta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transfer $74 million<\/a> from Pace and Metra to the CTA in a bid to delay service cuts in Chicago, Northwestern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/northwestern-pat-fitzgerald-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reached a settlement<\/a> with former football coach Pat Fitzgerald following his firing over the team\u2019s hazing scandal two years ago and the Naperville Board of Education agreed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/naperville-district-203-teacher-strike-averted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tentative deal<\/a> with its teachers union Friday, averting a planned strike.<\/p>\n<p>Things may be getting more expensive in Illinois. Health care insurers are proposing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/health-insurers-affordable-care-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double-digit rate increases<\/a> for those on the state\u2019s Affordable Care Act exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/20\/naperville-council-grocery-tax-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naperville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/19\/waukegan-grocery-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waukegan<\/a> are considering a local grocery tax\u00a0and Cubs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/chicago-cubs-increasing-season-ticket-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">season ticket prices<\/a> are going up between 5% and 8%.<\/p>\n<p>Also in sports, the Cubs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/20\/chicago-cubs-milwaukee-brewers-wrigley-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won their five-game series<\/a> against the\u00a0first-place Milwaukee Brewers, the Blackhawks and forward Frank Nazar agreed to a seven-year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/chicago-blackhawks-frank-nazar-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$46 million contract<\/a> and the Chicago Bulls announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/08\/21\/derrick-rose-chicago-bulls-jersey-number-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Derrick Rose\u2019s No. 1 jersey<\/a> will be retired in a ceremony early next year.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as part of a newsroom reorganization, the Tribune said goodbye to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/author\/michael-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its film critic<\/a> this week.
