In the Oval Office on Friday, he said his next steps could involve other large, Democratic-led cities he has repeatedly criticized for crime and mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmen7pzwp0012357t5qlkehza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cChicago\u2019s a mess. You have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent. And we\u2019ll straighten that one out. Probably next,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd then we\u2019ll help with New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmen7pzz80013357t92n2oz8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Mayor Brandon Johnson last week criticized the idea of using the national guard in Chicago, pointing instead to cuts the administration has made to anti-violence programs.<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmen7q0210014357t6hhcgi35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">\u201cIf President Trump wants to help make Chicago safer, he can start by releasing the funds for anti-violence programs that have been critical to our work,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cSending in the National Guard would only serve to destabilize our city and undermine our public safety efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"www.audacy.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmen7q0520015357t98tw0wg7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--station\">Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also slammed the idea last week arguing the president lacked the authority to use federal law enforcement to police Chicago.
