{"id":170812,"date":"2025-08-24T04:10:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T04:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/170812\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T04:10:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T04:10:09","slug":"taiwanese-laptop-maker-asus-subsidiary-builds-supercomputer-to-boost-islands-capacity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/170812\/","title":{"rendered":"Taiwanese laptop maker Asus\u2019 subsidiary builds supercomputer to boost island\u2019s capacity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A unit of Taiwanese consumer electronics giant <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/asus?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Asus<\/a> is developing a supercomputer, powered by <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/nvidia?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia<\/a> chips, that is expected to boost the island\u2019s computing capacity by at least 50 per cent, according to a senior executive.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">That infrastructure, a collaboration between Taiwan AI Cloud and the island\u2019s National Centre for High-Performance Computing, is expected to launch its initial phase with a capacity of 80 petaflops in December, said Peter Wu, CEO of Asus Cloud and Taiwan AI Cloud, in an interview with the South China Morning Post.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Located in the southern city of Tainan, the supercomputer would eventually have a total capacity of 250 petaflops. One petaflop is equal to 1 trillion calculations per second.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/hewlett-packard?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Hewlett Packard Enterprises<\/a>\u2019 El Capitan ranked No 1 in the June 2025 list of the world\u2019s most powerful supercomputers, with a capacity of 1,742 petaflops. This supercomputer, which started operations last year, takes up a 7,500 sq ft of floor space at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Wu said Taiwan\u2019s latest supercomputer project would boost the island\u2019s total computing capacity by at least 50 per cent.
