In total, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/07\/first-new-mta-subway-cars-arrive-for-testing-heres-a-sneak-peek.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2021\/07\/first-new-mta-subway-cars-arrive-for-testing-heres-a-sneak-peek.html\">75 R211S cars were ordered<\/a> to replace the R44 subway cars that make up the bulk of the Staten Island Railway\u2019s fleet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G622DZCHW5FDJBBS7RPK7NHT2I\">\u201cI would say it\u2019s harder to get a seat, because there\u2019s definitely less seats &#8230; I guess the lack of seats for people who need to sit is probably not the best,\u201d said Selena Cuevas of Pleasant Plains, referring to the new cars. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XVB7EKVCGBG4RHJND3V7NERCOY\">Natalya B. of New Dorp, who requested her last name not be used, said that the \u201cvery clear announcements\u201d are helpful on the new trains, because riders know which stop is next, \u201cbut in terms of space for seating there\u2019s much, much less.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"MTA SIR R211S\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/K5KOZLTOBJE4ZDXQG3AO4CPVI4.jpeg\" \/>This photo from 2023 shows the seating arrangement on the first of 75 new R211S train cars for the Staten Island Railway.(Advance\/SILive.com | Erik Bascome)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FWMGPY6WJZAPZDKQ47JKNV4H6Y\">The R211S design got rid of the L-shaped seating arrangement that had seats perpendicular to the windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QDDM4ZIDB5HVVKSXPG4JAR5N2I\">A spokesperson for the MTA confirmed that while the older R44 train cars have more seating than the newer models, it\u2019s at the expense of available standing room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W74JYSAYARFR5IFEPAUSELL62Y\">However, one rider said the new cars feel more packed with the number of people standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IU2TQTIF2NFUJCDZAOLCGZZWV4\">The newer R211 cars, the spokesperson said, offer improved circulation and better arrangements for standing and leaning. In the background, old R44 trains can still be seen.(Advance\/SILive.com | Mike Matteo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVELUSV5FNDNZDXMIYPJ4VFVIQ\">The MTA spokesperson said that the older cars will be kept around as part of a \u201cbest practice\u201d when rolling stock is upgraded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ICHOVFEAFRGRPKJM6PKW2E37UA\">\u201cIt is best practice in the industry to keep older cars, in this case R44 cars, available for a few years whenever a new fleet is introduced,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B2NP2YMPGBFKBOYSL5GHFK5MZI\">The new cars feature wider doors \u2014 eight inches more than the current MTA standard of a 50-inch opening \u2014 a change that allows straphangers to board and exit the train more quickly and reduce station stop times by up to 32%, according to the transit agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KMYDXHGN65D6PENAYS7VEYBFXI\">In addition, digital information displays are included in all the train cars to provide real-time, location-specific information. New handrails, featuring double-poles, have been installed to improve conditions for standing passengers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DMGNN5HGV5DOXHFTH6MEPJBDY4\">Lighting on the inside of the R211S has been upgraded, and MTA officials said the new cars provide a faster, smoother ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CO64CXS4FRHDDGVW3WNMLNCGVE\"> \u201cIt\u2019s good, and [the new cars] are clean, because they\u2019re so new,\u201d said Natalya B.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
