A new artistic installation celebrating Hoboken\u2019s waterfront heritage now greets visitors at City Hall, marking the latest addition to the city\u2019s growing public art collection.<\/p>\n
Local photographer and artist Jason Sagat unveiled his mural \u201cLayers\u201d in the main lobby of Hoboken City Hall on Aug. 7, with Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla and members of the Hoboken Arts Advisory Committee in attendance for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n
The large-scale photographic composition, permanently installed by the main staircase at 94 Washington St., features a layered image capturing a figure standing on the pavers of Pier A\u2019s waterfront walkway, gazing across the Hudson River.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis mural is a powerful tribute to Hoboken\u2019s relationship to the water,\u201d Bhalla said at the ceremony. \u201cBy capturing and transforming a familiar view of our waterfront, this installation will welcome residents and visitors alike into our historic City Hall with warmth, color, and a renewed sense of civic pride.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sagat is a longtime Hoboken resident known for his abstract urban visuals. His photographic style involves combining multiple images to create mosaic-like textures that convey movement and memory.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis mural captures the beauty, energy, and unique charm of the City of Hoboken and its community,\u201d Sagat said. \u201cI hope it inspires curiosity, motivation, and a sense of possibility and appreciation for the everyday world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n
The installation was made possible through a 2018 executive order by Mayor Bhalla that requires up to 1 percent of funding from bond ordinances be dedicated to public art installations throughout the city.<\/p>\n
