{"id":172725,"date":"2025-08-24T21:59:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:59:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/172725\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T21:59:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:59:12","slug":"cal-raleigh-hits-48th-49th-hrs-to-set-mlb-record-for-catchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/172725\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal Raleigh hits 48th, 49th HRs to set MLB record for catchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aug 24, 2025, 04:35 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>SEATTLE &#8212; <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"56d60582-088f-6848-5180-1fb04440cf87\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/sea\/seattle-mariners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mariners<\/a> slugger <a data-player-guid=\"6c27dcb5-a741-d526-b5ac-f3988e288a70\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41292\/cal-raleigh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cal Raleigh<\/a> hit his major league-leading 48th and 49th home runs on Sunday against the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"1d8ed3a9-4c7d-0941-3677-bb6defe67c7a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/ath\/athletics-athletics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Athletics<\/a>, setting a single-season record for catchers and passing <a data-player-guid=\"7e10b059-be78-960b-bc8d-c18c8057c297\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/31127\/salvador-perez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Salvador Perez<\/a>&#8216;s total with the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"11a5df00-0945-35a5-66fe-a3a107975558\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/kc\/kansas-city-royals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas City Royals<\/a> in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Raleigh&#8217;s record-breaking home run also marked his ninth multi-home run game of the season, passing Mickey Mantle (eight for the 1961 <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"2b9cedf3-ce60-0bcf-fafe-8cd055255685\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/nyy\/new-york-yankees\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Yankees<\/a>) for most multi-home run games by a switch-hitter in a season in major league history. Raleigh got a fastball down the middle from Lopez and sent it an estimated 448 feet, according to Statcast. It was measured as the longest home run of Raleigh&#8217;s career as a right-handed hitter.<\/p>\n<p>In the second inning, Raleigh drilled a changeup from Lopez 412 feet. The longballs were Nos. 39 and 40 on the season for Raleigh while catching this year. He has nine while serving as a designated hitter.<\/p>\n<p>Perez hit 15 home runs as a DH in 2021, and 33 at catcher.<\/p>\n<p>Only four other players in big league history have hit at least 40 homers in a season while primarily playing catcher: Johnny Bench (twice), Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza (twice). He became the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title. He is the second Mariners player to take the crown, after three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Raleigh&#8217;s homers gave him 106 RBIs on the season.
