{"id":172821,"date":"2025-08-24T22:51:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T22:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/172821\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T22:51:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T22:51:37","slug":"gen-z-teacher-talks-impact-of-cellphone-bans-on-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/172821\/","title":{"rendered":"Gen Z teacher talks impact of cellphone bans on schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>PHOENIX \u2014 Gen Z is making its way into the workforce \u2014 and into the classroom as young teachers.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is Sukhjeet Singh, a 25-year-old teacher at ASU Preparatory Academy.<\/p>\n<p>He said being a part of Gen Z comes with advantages, like the perspective needed to understand the pros and cons of classroom cellphones bans.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z teacher shares opinion on Arizona classroom cellphone bans<\/p>\n<p>Singh told\u00a0KTAR News 92.3 FM that requiring students to put their phones away at the beginning of classes encourages them to be self-reliant and focused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has really improved just the way these students are able to depend on themselves,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs <a href=\"https:\/\/azgovernor.gov\/office-arizona-governor\/news\/2025\/04\/governor-katie-hobbs-legislative-action-update-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">signed a bill into law<\/a> that requires some form of cellphone and internet restriction in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-education\/school-cellphone-ban\/5694703\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">her legislative action<\/a>, many schools across the state have put in place cellphone policies similar to ASU Prep\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstablishing that routine for them, without the interruption of social media, and without the interruption of all of these outside factors, has really improved and helped them become these young adults that we want them to be as they grow and progress into high school and college,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>What other advantages do Gen Z teachers have?<\/p>\n<p>Singh started working in the classroom through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachforamerica.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Teach for America<\/a>, a nonprofit that places recent college graduates in under-resourced schools.<\/p>\n<p>Since starting his educational journey, he said he\u2019s found multiple advantages of teaching students as a Gen Z teacher.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, he said he relates to children in a way that older teachers can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of times the kids will be referencing things in class that they\u2019ve seen on TikTok, or just memes that they\u2019ve seen, and then they\u2019re shocked that I know about it as well,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I have to remind them, \u2018I\u2019m not that much older than you guys,\u2019 and that we consume the same media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because he doesn\u2019t share his age with his students, many automatically assume he is in his 30s and 40s, Singh said.<\/p>\n<p>Singh says his age is also a benefit when it comes to lesson planning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also able to reflect on our education, our experiences in school that were just a couple years ago,\u201d he said. \u2018We\u2019re able to kind of reflect and see what worked for us and what we wish we could have done in school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funding for this journalism is made possible by the Arizona Local News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/@shiratanzernews\" data-show-count=\"false\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Follow @@shiratanzernews<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We want to hear from you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Have a story idea or tip?
