Kushner\u2019s open letter<\/a>, published Sunday in the Wall Street Journal, noted the U.S. envoy\u2019s \u201cdeep concern over the dramatic rise of antisemitism in France and the lack of sufficient action by your government to confront it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump and I have Jewish children and share Jewish grandchildren,\u201d Kushner wrote. \u201cI know how he feels about antisemitism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Antisemitic incidents have surged in France<\/a> following the Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and the ensuing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Asked whether the State Department shared Kushner\u2019s view that France was not doing enough to combat antisemitism, its principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in an emailed statement: \u201cYes, we stand by his comments. Ambassador Kushner is our U.S. government representative in France and is doing a great job advancing our national interests in that role.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pigott did not respond to France\u2019s claim that Kushner\u2019s open letter violated international law.<\/p>\n

France said it \u201cfirmly refutes\u201d Kushner\u2019s claims, adding that its \u201cauthorities are demonstrating total mobilization, as these acts [of antisemitism] are intolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kushner\u2019s letter followed France\u2019s decision to recognize a Palestinian state, which is being spearheaded by Macron ahead of next month\u2019s U.N. General Assembly. That sparked a vociferous response<\/a> from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who claimed it was \u201cfueling the antisemitic fire in France.\u201d<\/p>\n
