{"id":173527,"date":"2025-08-25T05:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T05:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173527\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T05:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T05:18:11","slug":"ryan-coogler-mary-corse-to-be-honored-at-lacmas-2025-artfilm-gala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173527\/","title":{"rendered":"Ryan Coogler, Mary Corse to be honored at LACMA&#8217;s 2025 Art+Film Gala"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Director Ryan Coogler and artist Mary Corse will be honored at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\u2019s 14th annual Art+Film Gala, the museum announced Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The splashy, high-fashion dinner is co-chaired by LACMA trustee Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio, and is scheduled to take place on Nov. 1. It will be the last such event to occur <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2025-03-11\/lacma-new-building-david-geffen-galleries-plaza-opening-date\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before the museum opens<\/a> its new Peter Zumthor-designed building next spring.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles is uniquely suited for the gala, which seeks to highlight and strengthen the connections between film and visual art by bringing the two communities together in grand style. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2024-11-03\/lacma-art-film-gala-kim-kardashian-blake-lively-leonardo-dicaprio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last year\u2019s honorees<\/a> were Baz Luhrmann and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2024-06-01\/mickalene-thomas-borad-simone-leigh-caam-lacma-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simone Leigh<\/a>, and per usual, a host of celebrity guests attended the party including Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian, Laura Dern, Viola Davis, Andrew Garfield and Sarah Paulson. Charli XCX closed out the night with a banger.<\/p>\n<p>LACMA Director and Chief Executive Michael Govan called last year\u2019s event, which raised $6.4 million, its most successful ever. Proceeds go toward LACMA\u2019s mission of making film more central to its programming, as well as toward funding exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programming. <\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Mary Corse will be honored at LACMA's Art + Film gala.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"1608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756099091_71_\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Mary Corse will be honored at LACMA\u2019s Art + Film gala.<\/p>\n<p>(Indah Datou)<\/p>\n<p>Other previous honorees include artists Helen Pashgian, Betye Saar, Catherine Opie, Mark Bradford, Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Barbara Kruger, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari. On the film side there has been Park Chan-wook, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n, Guillermo del Toro, George Lucas, Kathryn Bigelow, Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick and Clint Eastwood.<\/p>\n<p>Coogler \u2014 who directed \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d \u201cCreed\u201d and \u201cFruitvale Station\u201d \u2014 is having a stellar year. His gory Southern-vampire horror film \u201cSinners,\u201d which was released in mid-April, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/newsletter\/2025-04-22\/what-ryan-cooglers-unusual-sinners-deal-does-and-doesnt-mean-for-hollywood-the-wide-shot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been a massive hit<\/a>. The film, which had a budget of $90 million, grossed $48 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada during its opening weekend, and has gone on to gross more than $365 million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Topanga-based painter <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2019-08-04\/mary-corse-light-paintings-lacma-whitney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mary Corse<\/a> is known for her connection to Southern California\u2019s Light and Space movement, but her career has been defined by her willingness to experiment with form and various materials, including ceramics and acrylic on canvas. Corse devoted much of her life to her \u201cWhite Light\u201d series, which involves layering tiny glass beads \u2014 called microspheres \u2014 over white acrylic paint for a constantly shifting, reflective effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary Corse has continually expanded the possibilities of painting in her exquisite works, which invite us to think deeply about the nature of perception,\u201d said Govan in a statement. \u201cRyan Coogler\u2019s films do something equally transformative.
