{"id":173649,"date":"2025-08-25T06:25:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T06:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173649\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T06:25:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T06:25:25","slug":"philadelphia-teachers-union-says-they-reached-contract-agreement-nbc10-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173649\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia teachers union says they reached contract agreement \u2013 NBC10 Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/tag\/philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Philadelphia<\/a> Federation of Teachers and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/tag\/philadelphia-school-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Philly School District<\/a> have reached a tentative contract agreement, the two sides announced in a joint statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes the day before school was set to begin for the district, and a week before the previous contract was set to expire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe PFT is thrilled that we have been able to reach a tentative agreement with the School District of Philadelphia on a three-year pact ensuring that school will open on time, as well as three years of labor peace,\u201d said\u00a0PFT President Arthur G. Steinberg in a release. <\/p>\n<p>The agreement, if approved by the union&#8217;s 14,000 members, would end the possibility of a teachers strike, which members had voted to authorize earlier this summer.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/negotiations-philly-school-district-teachers-continue\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/negotiations-philly-school-district-teachers-continue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">negotiations continued between the two sides<\/a> in recent weeks, teachers were beginning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/philly-teachers-union-possible-strike\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/philly-teachers-union-possible-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">to make picket signs<\/a> in preparation for a potential work stoppage. <\/p>\n<p>Little details of the agreement were not immediately available, but Steinberg called the agreement &#8220;historic&#8221; and Superintendent Tony Watlington, Sr., was quoted in the release as saying it was for three years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased that we have reached\u00a0a tentative three year agreement that\u00a0both honors the hard work of our educators\u00a0and\u00a0maintains our record of strong financial stewardship,\u201d\u00a0said<strong> <\/strong>Watlington. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive decades of research has shown us\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that highly qualified, well-supported, and stable teachers over time are the number one factor in accelerating student achievement, and as we begin the new school year, this contract gives us stability, clarity, and momentum to continue working in partnership with the PFT and to further\u00a0 implement our five year strategic plan,\u00a0Accelerate Philly.
