NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Today on “Tiempo,” Tanya Rivero speaks with the president of the New York Immigration Coalition about conditions for migrants detained at 26 Federal Plaza. Also, she is joined by Helen Iris Torres of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), a nonprofit that supports Latinas through leadership, advocacy, and education.<\/p>\n
Last week, immigration advocates and healthcare professionals held a rally outside 26 Federal Plaza to protest the lack of medical care inside the ICE detention center.<\/p>\n
Migrants are “being tricked and trapped to get to court, and then detained and disappeared,” said Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition.<\/p>\n
The rally came after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against the federal government, requiring that detainees be given medical care, access to hygiene, sleeping mats, and more space.<\/p>\n
“People need to be given dignified food, need to be treated with respect, need to have access to their immigration lawyer and their families, need to be given sleeping mats and blankets … very basic things that the Department of Homeland Security was rejecting,” Awawdeh explained.<\/p>\n
Tanya also spoke with Helen Iris Torres, leader of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), a nonprofit seeking to uplift and support Latinas by ensuring economic and political parity.<\/p>\n
HOPE programs and educational events are open to all individuals who support Latina leadership and seek to strengthen democracy and advance economic mobility.<\/p>\n
“All voices count. We want to ensure that all voices are not only counted, but that we ensure that Latinas are part of that conversation,” Torres said.<\/p>\n
“One of the key things that we’ve been able to do is bring research and data to Latina leaders and others,” she said. “We celebrate the economic opportunities that Latinas bring to the table.”<\/p>\n
