HOUSTON<\/strong> \u2013 Harris County District Attorney\u2019s Office has issued Brady Notices in 364 cases, 189 of which are still pending, following the firing of a Houston Forensic Science Center Crime Scene Unit Investigator.<\/p>\n

The notices, which began going out in late May, stem from an internal investigation into Katie Busack for what HFSC officials are calling \u201cdishonesty and lack of candor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials say, Busack processed a vehicle for forensic evidence and \u201cinadvertently left their case notes at the [Houston Police Department] property room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once her management received the files and the original report, they found \u201cseveral additional pages and notes that were not included in the original case file.\u201d <\/p>\n

The report states that when Busack was confronted about the issues, she \u201cwas dishonest with leadership about the dates of origin.\u201d <\/p>\n

In a statement, HFSC shares, \u201cCase note documentation is a necessary part of forensic work and must be created in compliance with our policies. By law, HFSC is required to disclose to the District Attorney\u2019s Office any potential issues of this nature involving a forensic expert. Accountability to all participants in the legal process is imperative.\u201d <\/p>\n

Prosecutors tell 2 Investigates they do not yet know what impact this will have on the 364 cases. <\/p>\n

One of those cases involves the 2021 death of five-year-old Samuel Olson. Benjamin Rivera pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence by helping his roommate move the boy\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors do not believe the Brady Notice<\/a> about Busack\u2019s termination will have any impact on the Rivera case. <\/p>\n
