SAN ANTONIO <\/strong> \u2013 Local markets are intended to bring vendors from across communities together, such as the Peral\u2019s Maker\u2019s Market on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, however, vendors are divided on how to move forward amid tariffs.<\/p>\n

Mira Matcha sources its matcha directly from Kyushu, Japan. Its owner, Marissa Gamez, said she has had to get creative in the face of tariffs.<\/p>\n

At first, Gamez placed a fast-tracked bulk order of matcha in order to avoid the higher cost.<\/p>\n

However, as the world has dealt with a matcha shortage, Gamez said she had no choice but to raise prices. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe farms we\u2019re working with were like, \u2019Hey, we need to mail this out by this date because if we don\u2019t, it\u2019s going to go from 15% to 24% to potentially 34%, and it was really scary,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

President Trump recently signed an executive order, going into effect on August 29th, which will end the \u2018de minimis\u2019 rule. In the past, this has allowed shipments entering the United States worth less than $800 to enter duty-free.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I\u2019m so glad that I decided to source locally and use beeswax from a bee farm,” said Hana Blain, owner of Bare Studios.<\/p>\n

Other vendors said that sourcing their materials within the United States has made them well-positioned to compete in the market.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s helped me because my prices haven\u2019t changed,\u201d said Dusty Pearson, owner of Dusty\u2019s Saw Designs. \u201cI choose to buy quality material because I try to produce a quality product for my client.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gamez disagrees that not sourcing locally means an inferior product.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe put the time into the drink,\u201d Gamez said. \u201cWe don\u2019t take shortcuts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gamez said her loyal customer base, who seek high-quality products, is keeping her afloat, along with events like the one held at the Pearl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really don\u2019t think we would be in the position that we are now without the Pearl,\u201d Gamez said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a great platform, and it\u2019s such a community, and there\u2019s just trust within San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those looking to begin sourcing goods locally amid tariffs, Blain encourages entrepreneurs to do their homework before selecting vendors.<\/p>\n

\u201cKnow your sources, know where they get their stuff, know how they make it, know who\u2019s touching it, who\u2019s making it, who\u2019s shipping,\u201d she said, \u201cthat\u2019s your best bet.\u201d <\/p>\n
