{"id":173897,"date":"2025-08-25T08:44:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T08:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173897\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T08:44:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T08:44:09","slug":"france-summons-us-ambassador-kushner-over-unacceptable-letter-about-rising-antisemitism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/173897\/","title":{"rendered":"France summons US Ambassador Kushner over &#8216;unacceptable&#8217; letter about rising antisemitism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 France has summoned the American ambassador to Paris after the diplomat, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/charles-kushner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Kushner<\/a>, wrote a letter to French President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/emmanuel-macron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> alleging the country did not do enough to combat antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s foreign ministry issued a statement Sunday announcing it had summoned Kushner to appear Monday at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and that his allegations \u201care unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott on Sunday evening said it stood by Kushner\u2019s comments, adding: \u201cAmbassador Kushner is our U.S. government representative in France and is doing a great job advancing our national interests in that role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The summoning of the ambassador is a formal and public notice of displeasure. <\/p>\n<p>Kushner, a real-estate developer, is the father of President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> son-in-law Jared Kushner.<\/p>\n<p>The French foreign ministry, in its statement, said \u201cFrance firmly rejects these allegations\u201d from Kushner and that French authorities have \u201cfully mobilized\u201d to combat a rise in antisemitic acts since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, deeming the acts \u201cintolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, released late on Sunday, Kushner writes that \u201cpublic statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence and endanger Jewish life in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kushner urges Macron \u201cto act decisively: enforce hate-crime laws without exception, ensure the safety of Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses &#8230; and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and its allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kushner\u2019s allegations violate international law and the obligation not to interfere with the internal affairs of another country, the French ministry said, and, \u201cThey also fall short of the quality of the transatlantic partnership between France and the United States and of the trust that must prevail between allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dustup follows Macron\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/netanyahu-macron-antisemitism-france-palestinian-state-ba792f5c6875fb72ce4297d0a56f036d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejection this past week of accusations from<\/a> Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that France\u2019s intention to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-recognize-palestine-state-macron-800ed63143f0653a7f215ad96f7038d3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recognize a Palestinian state<\/a> is fueling antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>France is home to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-macron-rabbi-attack-antisemitism-orleans-2618957ae166c99809ccd659afb2e2e8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the largest Jewish population in Europe<\/a>, with an estimated 500,000 Jews, the third-largest Jewish population in the world after Israel and the United States. That\u2019s approximately 1% of the national population.<\/p>\n<p>The diplomatic discord comes as French-U.S. relations have faced tensions this year <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-eu-trade-trump-von-der-leyen-f49188375527cac6a4d458b49f641bab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amid Trump\u2019s trade war<\/a> and a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-peacekeeping-force-lebanon-israel-trump-f11b5b48425de7a7c5c91978319b9623\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">split over the future of U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon<\/a>. France in particular has objected to the U.S. push to wind down the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/un-lebanon-israel-security-council-statement-hezbollah-e391d8ffe57eebcf8bc294310bb922bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">peacekeeping operation known as UNIFIL<\/a>, with a vote on the issue set for the end of the month by the U.N.
