{"id":174338,"date":"2025-08-25T12:46:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T12:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/174338\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T12:46:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T12:46:23","slug":"philadelphia-teachers-union-reaches-tentative-agreement-with-school-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/174338\/","title":{"rendered":"Philadelphia teachers union reaches tentative agreement with school district"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">The Philadelphia teachers union and school district reached a tentative contract agreement late Sunday night, potentially avoiding a citywide teachers\u2019 strike hours before students and teachers return to the classroom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">District and union leaders announced they had reached a three-year contract agreement, but they did not disclose any details about the contents of the agreement as of Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">\u201cThe PFT is thrilled that we have been able to reach a tentative agreement with the School District of Philadelphia on a three-year pact ensuring that school will open on time, as well as three years of labor peace,\u201d said PFT President Arthur Steinberg in a joint statement with Superintendent Tony Watlington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Watlington said in the statement that the agreement \u201cboth honors the hard work of our educators and maintains our record of strong financial stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Union leaders had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/philadelphia\/2025\/07\/31\/philly-teachers-union-prepares-for-strike-first-day-of-school\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preparing their members for a strike<\/a> in the leadup to the school year. The PFT, which represents some 14,000 educators and school staff, was negotiating for salary increases, amending the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/philadelphia\/2024\/02\/29\/teachers-union-members-protest-district-sick-days-policy\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">district\u2019s controversial sick leave policy<\/a> that union members say punishes teachers for using sick days, and adding paid parental leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Though neither Steinberg nor district spokespeople would comment on the details of the negotiation process earlier this month, Steinberg previously told Chalkbeat the district\u2019s proposals \u201cweren\u2019t as irksome as they usually are\u201d and that during negotiations \u201cnothing that set a bad tone, as it has in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">The three-year agreement will be put to PFT members for a ratification vote and if approved, it will also go to the Board of Education for a vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-1px4eze-0 egVxCn body-paragraph\">Carly Sitrin is the bureau chief for Chalkbeat Philadelphia.
