Witnesses described continuous explosions in Zeitoun and Shejaia while tanks shelled the Sabra neighbourhood and several buildings were destroyed in Jabaliya.<\/p>\n<p>At least 15 people, including three journalists, were killed when Israeli strikes hit Gaza\u2019s Nasser Hospital on Monday, Palestinian health officials said, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"lazyloading\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-type=\"lazyloading-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/track_1x1.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/track_1x1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1px\" height=\"1px\" style=\"display:none;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some residents began leaving the city, carrying belongings on vehicles and rickshaws. \u201cNo place is safe, but I can\u2019t take the risk,\u201d said Mohammad, 40, who fled with his wife and daughters. (AP Photo)<br \/>\nHumanitarian disaster deepens<\/p>\n<p>Conditions in Gaza City have sharply deteriorated. A UN-backed food security report released Friday warned that a famine in the city and surrounding areas is \u201centirely man-made\u201d and spreading rapidly. \u201cStarvation is present and is rapidly spreading \u2026 avoidable deaths will increase exponentially,\u201d the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said, according to The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Gaza\u2019s health ministry reported eight new deaths from malnutrition and starvation, bringing the total to 289, including 115 children, since the war began. Meanwhile, Gaza\u2019s civil defence said at least 42 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Sunday, including eight in Sabra.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press also reported that Israeli forces shot and killed four Palestinians seeking food aid in a military zone south of Gaza City. Witnesses said the gunfire erupted when crowds pushed toward a distribution site run by a US-backed contractor.<\/p>\n<p>Hamas presence fades, but not gone<\/p>\n<p>Hamas, which made Gaza City its administrative capital after seizing control in 2007, has largely vanished from public view. More recently, a subgroup, known as Al Rade\u2019a, surfaced in videos threatening gangs accused of stealing aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamas is not a static institution or figure,\u201d Alex Plitsas, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, told CNN. \u201cThey\u2019ve gone on a recruiting spree and replaced folks that were there \u2026 they effectively act like an insurgent force for an elected government in the middle of a war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s defence minister Israel Katz Sunday vowed to press ahead with the offensive, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/israel-defence-minister-gaza-city-destruction-10204448\/lite\/\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warning earlier that Gaza City would be razed<\/a><\/strong> unless Hamas ended the war on Israel\u2019s terms and released remaining hostages. Hamas countered that only a ceasefire agreement could bring about the release of hostages, blaming Prime Minister <a rel=\"noamphtml nofollow noopener\" class=\"keywordtourl\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/about\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> for their fate.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Israel faces international scrutiny.
