It was the third time in less than a week that U.S. forces deployed planes after a Russian plane was spotted inside the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, a section of international airspace just outside of U.S. and Canadian sovereign space that both countries monitor closely.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of Russian activity is not considered a threat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russian-aircraft-spotted-and-tracked-flying-near-alaska-again-norad-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">and happens regularly<\/a> in the identification zone, which extends outward from U.S. territory off the coast of Alaska, said NORAD. Although the designated area does not belong to any individual country, aircraft that enter the zone are required to identify themselves to the U.S. and Canada for national security reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NORAD detected and tracked one IL-20 COOT, a Cold War-era reconnaissance aircraft operated by the Russian military, in the Alaskan identification zone Sunday after surveilling the same type of plane flying over the region <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norad.mil\/Newsroom\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4281339\/norad-detects-and-tracks-russian-aircraft-operating-in-the-alaskan-air-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wednesday<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norad.mil\/Newsroom\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4282988\/norad-detects-and-tracks-russian-aircraft-operating-in-the-alaskan-air-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thursday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In each instance, NORAD responded by scrambling multiple fighter jets to monitor the spy plane, according to the military command. The Russian aircraft never entered U.S. or Canadian sovereign territory, remaining in the international zone off Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. military officials have detected Russian warplanes inside the Alaskan identification zone on numerous occasions this year, including sightings within the bounds of the international space <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russia-warplanes-alaska-tracked-us-military-norad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in April<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.norad.mil\/Newsroom\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4252537\/norad-detects-and-tracks-russian-aircraft-operating-in-the-alaskan-air-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">July<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udcf8 Striking imagery captured by our Alaskan NORAD region from last night&#8217;s ADIZ incursion by Russian military aircraft<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WeHaveTheWatch?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#WeHaveTheWatch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7LfQn27X1l\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/7LfQn27X1l<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 North American Aerospace Defense Command (@NORADCommand) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NORADCommand\/status\/1948130235553366032?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 23, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier, in January, the U.S. and Canada scrambled fighter jets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/us-fighter-jets-scrambled-russia-warplanes-arctic-norad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">to track Russian warplanes over the Arctic<\/a> in an incident that drew scrutiny as geopolitical tension increased in the region. At the time, the U.S. military said it had dispatched two fighter jets to Greenland to &#8220;forward posture NORAD presence in the Arctic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In September 2024,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/video-russia-jet-dangerously-close-aircraft-alaska-norad\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NORAD posted dramatic video<\/a>\u00a0of a Russian jet flying &#8220;within just a few feet&#8221; of NORAD aircraft off the coast of Alaska.
