{"id":175635,"date":"2025-08-26T00:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T00:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/175635\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T00:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T00:16:12","slug":"childhood-cancer-survivor-becomes-medical-student-at-university-of-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/175635\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood cancer survivor becomes medical student at University of Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) &#8212; Childhood cancer survivor Micaela Alpert is starting the next chapter of her journey as a <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.med.upenn.edu\/student\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical student at the University of Pennsylvania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">22-year-old Alpert was diagnosed with cancer as an 8th-grade student during the 2016-2017 school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Despite a poor prognosis, her doctors at <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children&#8217;s Hospital of Philadelphia<\/a> implemented a novel form of immunotherapy. It shrunk her tumors and allowed her to get back on her feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The New Jersey native became certified as an EMT in high school. For her Make-A-Wish trip, she chose to visit the Texas Heart Institute to shadow healthcare professionals and learn what life is like as a cardiothoracic surgeon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">During her undergraduate studies, she worked in the Children&#8217;s Hospital of Philadelphia division of hematology.
