\n\tAddressing this week\u2019s UN Internet Governance Forum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/a> said he wanted to focus on one basic principle.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYour digital self should belong to you. That the data that humans produce \u2014 our writings and our voices and our connections, our experiences, our ideas \u2014 should belong to us. And that any economic value that\u2019s generated from this data should be shared with the humans that produce it,\u201d he said in a short speech.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, that very concept is being mulled right now in Hollywood and being litigated between content producers and tech giants. Just yesterday, a federal judge ruled<\/a> that\u00a0Meta<\/a>\u2018s unauthorized use of copyrighted works from\u00a0Sarah Silverman<\/a>\u00a0and other authors to train generative\u00a0AI<\/a>\u00a0models is a \u201cfair use,\u201d but warned that the practice may in many circumstances be illegal.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actual impacts of AI, said Gordon-Levitt in a fireside chat at the UN Forum, could be very broad.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think that the impact could mean that creativity as we know it, sort of goes away, to be really honest. I hate to put it in grave terms. That\u2019s a worst-case scenario, but I think it\u2019s on the table. I don\u2019t think it has to happen that way. I think if we all figure out how to steer the ship, so to speak, the technology could be a wonderful thing for creativity, and we\u2019re sort of at that crossroads right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAI and its impacts are familiar terrain for Gordon-Levitt. Late last year, Deadline broke the news<\/a> that he was set to direct an untitled AI thriller for\u00a0T-Street Productions<\/a>, the production company of\u00a0Rian Johnson<\/a>\u00a0& Ram Bergman, with\u00a0Anne Hathaway<\/a>\u00a0set to star. And for more than a decade, the actor has run a company in the digital space; HitRecord is an online collaborative media platform he founded with his brother Dan.<\/p>\n
