The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a 37-year-old man was shot and killed by officers after an hour-and-a-half-long standoff.<\/p>\n
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Nine Jacksonville Sheriff’s officers shot and killed a man who reached into a rifle case while barricaded in a car Monday evening, Chief Alan Parker confirmed.<\/p>\n
It began around 6 p.m. at the Dutton Island Preserve Boat Ramp, where a couple was fishing.<\/p>\n
At a news conference with Sheriff T.K. Waters, Parker explained that the couple started hearing gunshots and looked up to find a 37-year-old man shooting a rifle into the water.<\/p>\n
The man from the couple reportedly walked over to the suspect firing the gun to ask if he was okay.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the chief, the suspect then pointed the gun at the man and said something along the lines of, “I know you already called the police. The only way they’re getting me out of here is dead.”<\/p>\n
The man continued talking to the suspect in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. At one point, Parker said, the suspect asked the couple for water.<\/p>\n
While the couple didn’t have water, they attempted to bring the suspect a bottle of Gatorade. Parker said that’s when the suspect pointed the rifle at the man’s head and the two began fighting over it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe victim in this ends up on top of the suspect, holding the gun, and he kind of pointed it, and he emptied the magazine,” Chief Alan Parker said. “He just squeezed the rounds out… he then throws the rifle away.”<\/p>\n
The suspect left, and the couple got back in their car, before the suspect began “barreling at them head-on” in his vehicle, according to the chief.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Parker said the suspect side-swiped the couple’s car, hit another car on Mayport Road and then crashed into some bushes and a pole.<\/p>\n
Officers responded to the suspect’s vehicle around 6:05 p.m. and tried to get him to safely exit the vehicle until about 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Parker said the man repeatedly refused officers’ commands to get out before he picked up his rifle case and reached into it.<\/p>\n
Nine officers at the scene responded by shooting at the suspect, according to Parker. He died from his injuries.<\/p>\n
Sheriff Waters said the couple is “shaken up” but not hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Parker said the suspect’s criminal history is limited to traffic infractions and criminal mischief.\u00a0<\/p>\n
According to the chief, this is the 14th officer-involved shooting of the year for the sheriff’s office.<\/p>\n
