\n\tThe second season of The Golden Bachelor<\/a> has not yet begun, but its lead is already raising eyebrows about his journey for love. <\/p>\n

\n\tMel Owens<\/a>, a 66-year-old former NFL player turned lawyer, is the lead this season, having played college football for the University of Michigan Wolverines, followed by a nine-year NFL career as a linebacker with the Los Angeles Rams.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Michigan football podcast MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen earlier this month, Owens opened up about what he\u2019s looking for in women on the show, which is set to premiere this fall. He explained that while going through the casting process, producers asked him, \u201c\u2018What\u2019s your preferences?\u2019 so I just said, \u201945 to 60,\u2019 just being honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen he was then chosen as the lead, Owens recounted having lunch with an executive producer on the show, telling him, \u201c\u2018If they\u2019re 60 or over, I\u2019m cutting them,’\u201d while also noting, \u201cThis is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[The executive producer] goes, \u2018But they\u2019re going to be hot, don\u2019t worry about it, don\u2019t worry about it.\u2019 He goes, \u2018You can\u2019t use the word cut,\u2019 I go, \u2018That\u2019s an NFL term,’\u201d he continued the conversation with the EP, adding that he had no say in the women chosen for his season. On top of the age parameters, \u201cThey\u2019ve got to be fit, because I stay in shape and workout and stuff. And I told them to try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWarner Bros. and ABC, who are behind the hit dating franchise, did not immediately return requests for comment.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe first season of\u00a0The Golden Bachelor\u00a0starred\u00a0Gerry Turner<\/a>\u00a0in the lead role, which was a ratings hit, although he faced his own dating life controversies<\/a> as the series aired. Turner, 72, found love on his season with Theresa Nist, whom he married in a\u00a0televised\u00a0wedding on ABC<\/a>\u00a0in January 2024. However,\u00a0three months after their vows, the couple\u00a0announced\u00a0they were divorcing<\/a>\u00a0in a joint interview on\u00a0Good Morning America. Nearly a year later, Turner\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0he had been diagnosed with cancer.<\/p>\n
