{"id":176262,"date":"2025-08-26T06:01:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-26T06:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/176262\/"},"modified":"2025-08-26T06:01:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-26T06:01:11","slug":"dust-storm-blows-away-ukrainian-artwork-at-burning-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/176262\/","title":{"rendered":"Dust Storm Blows Away Ukrainian Artwork at Burning Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ferocious desert stormwinds have swept away a colossal Ukrainian artwork within hours of its installation at the annual Burning Man cultural festival in Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>A visual metaphor for the impending threat of war, the 50-foot-tall (~15.2-meter-tall) inflatable \u201cBlack Cloud\u201d was destroyed shortly after debuting at the Black Rock Desert event yesterday, August 24, on Ukraine\u2019s Independence Day. The work consisted of 45 interconnected blow-up forms with flashing strobes and a continuous soundscape created from real audio of warfare in Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>General producer Vitaliy Deynega wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=25215304464725556&amp;set=a.578137725535572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> that although the installation was intended to withstand such weather conditions, it was torn apart in less than 15 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on-async--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/black-cloud-install-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1036945\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tThe installation served as a visual metaphor of the threat of impending war.\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on-async--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/black-cloud-byebye-1200x800.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1036952\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tFierce gusts of wind tore apart the inflatable installation within 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a feeling I experienced only once before \u2014 in February 2022, when I woke up to explosions and sirens,\u201d Deynega said in a statement shared with Hyperallergic.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful dust storm, accompanied by 50 mph winds, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/dust-storms-heat-thunder-burning-man-attendees-face-wild-weather-rcna226971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a> resulted in at least four minor injuries at Burning Man so far. It comes two years after torrential rainfall transformed the desert cultural festival into an <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/843424\/searing-memes-about-burning-mans-muddy-fiasco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enormous mud pit<\/a> that stranded over 70,000 festival attendees in the temporary encampment. Hyperallergic has contacted Burning Man for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Footage shows gusts of dusty wind dragging the inflatable across the desert as workers desperately tried to secure it in place.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the damage, the team behind \u201cBlack Cloud\u201d has confirmed that the installation is slated to be rebuilt for a European tour. Dates and locations have not yet been announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack Cloud\u201d wasn\u2019t the first Burning Man artwork to draw attention to the horrors of Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine. At last year\u2019s festival, Deynega and other Ukrainian artists <a href=\"https:\/\/imfine.ukraine.ua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled<\/a> \u201cI\u2019m Fine,\u201d a more than 2,000-pound sculpture made of street signs from across the nation that were damaged by bullets and shrapnel. <\/p>\n<p>Since the start of Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion more than three years ago, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has <a href=\"https:\/\/ukraine.un.org\/en\/299761-number-civilians-killed-and-injured-ukraine-reaches-three-year-monthly-high-july-2025-un\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> 13,883 civilian deaths, including 726 children.
